The International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to take a final call on T20 World Cup on Thursday. The governing body of world cricket has not been able to arrive at a decision in its last three meetings on the T20 World Cup slated to be held in October-November in Australia.
With Cricket Australia making it clear that staging of the marquee event is unrealistic during that time, it goes to be seen if the ICC decides to formally announce the postponement on Thursday.
It is learnt that ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar is deliberately delaying the fate of the T20 World Cup in order to give Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) the minimal time to organize the Indian Premier League (IPL).
BCCI can only go ahead with its plan to stage the cash rich league if and only if the ICC decides to postpone the T20 World Cup. However, all that will depend on various approvals from the government and also how much the situation improves as far as Coronavirus is concerned.
Cricket Australia is keen to stage the T20 World Cup next year provided BCCI decides not to host it next year which is very unlikely. India is scheduled to host next year’s T20 World Cup.
