It’ll likely debut in July, but Android Police’s David Ruddock suggests Google hasn’t decided on an exact date. Further, the Pixel 4a might get delayed into August or September if the supply chain struggles to manufacture units. Since Google allegedly made a late-stage audible, manufacturing partners need additional time. Manufacturers are also still in the process of reopening facilities during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Google initially planned to announce the Pixel 4a in May; however, after Apple’s iPhone SE made its presence known, the product needed some tweaking to remain competitive. Reports indicate that Google canceled the 64GB model and will lower the 128GB model’s price to $349. If true, the Pixel 4a will cost $50 less than the iPhone SE while offering more storage.
Specifications for the Pixel 4a are expected to include a 5.81-inch display, a Snapdragon 730, 6GB of RAM, and a 3080mAh battery. It’ll also include a rear-based fingerprint scanner.
Meanwhile, Pixel 5 appears on track to go official sometime this fall. It will reportedly feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765, and the Pixel 5 might lose the Soli radar chip that enables Motion Sense and other hands-free capabilities. Hardware sales aren’t all that impressive in Mountain View, apparently forcing Google to rethink its lineup and roll out affordable smartphones rather than $1,000 flagships that don’t stand out.
