Premier psychiatric medical center, NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals (NPH), helps patients suffering from complex medical/neurological and psychiatric disorders
South Bend, IN / NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals (NPH), is a premier psychiatric system providing care for patients with complex medical, behavioral and neuropsychiatric issues. They are dedicated to treating patients with mental health issues so they can stay out of jail and emergency rooms.
The NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals system specializes in the treatment of patients who have serious acute psychiatric events and comorbid medical and/or neurological disorders. NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals are the intersection of psychiatry and internal medicine and specializes in patients with little alternatives.
According to the National Association of Mental Illness, 2 million people with mental illness are booked into jails each year. Nearly 15% of men and 30% of women booked into jails have a serious mental health condition. At least 83% of jail inmates with a mental illness did not have access to needed treatment. Additionally, according to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, in 2015, a U.S. assessment reported that 25% of homeless people were seriously mentally ill, and 45% had some sort of mental illness.
“Many mentally ill patients are kept in prisons, emergency rooms and homeless shelters due to lack of access to treatment,” said NeuroPsychiatric Hospital Founder and Chairman, Dr. Cameron Gilbert of Indiana. “In jail, many people don’t get the help they need and end up getting worse. Families and caregivers are often forced to seek help for their loved ones in crisis at emergency rooms due to the lack of access of care for patients suffering with both medical and psychiatric disorders resulting in poor care and taking up vital, lifesaving space needed by acute medical and surgical patients. The lack of access to appropriate care coupled with Medicare Advantage plans and commercial insurance companies continued blocking of mental health benefits causes a terrible cycle. Even with the mental health benefits and the Mental Health Parity laws, insurance companies have become masters of manipulating patients and hospitals into not providing care. Without proper treatment, the individual ends up in places like jail and frequent fliers at emergency rooms across the country because he or she simply has no-where else to go, which can lead to them being re-arrested.”
NPH Founder and Chairman, Dr. Cameron Gilbert of Indiana, founded NPH in 2006. Dr. Cameron Gilbert holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a post-doctoral fellowship in geropsychology with a sub-specialty focus in geriatric neuropsychology. Prior to founding NPH, Dr. Cameron Gilbert held CEO roles in hospitals in Indiana and Louisiana. NPH owns hospitals in the Midwest and will soon be opening hospitals in Arizona and Texas.
“At NeuroPsychiatric Hospital, we provide full-time treatment for people who suffer from mental and physical health issues,” Dr. Cameron Gilbert of Indiana. “Our patients belong to an excessively growing population of patients with little or no treatment options. Their diseases are not isolated to any class of individuals. From a person trying to recover from homelessness to pro athletes, mental illness does not discriminate. At NPH, we take great care and consideration in helping people get back to living their normal, safe, and secure lives no matter who they are.”
