Hello Friends,
My name is Motoshi Kosako I am a harpist , a composer and band leader of the KoMaGa Trio.
I am one of very few harpists in the world who is making a living as a concert Jazz harpist. I have been expanding the possibilities of the harp into the realm of non-classical and improvisational music by developing my own unique styles of composition and through the invention of new techniques.
I assume that most of you have never heard of Jazz Harp, not many people have.
Two of the most common responses from concert promoters and musical industry agents are “Jazz Harp? No, I don’t think that works.” or “ I have heard Jazz played with harp, but it wasn’t very good.” Most of the time these people haven’t even bothered listening to my recordings or watching my YouTube videos. And on the rare occasion that they do, well the response is “Oh, we can’t get an audience for this kind of jazz”.
What this means is that I must produce an album that gives listeners a taste of what jazz harp can be. I must produce an album that everyone from severe jazz-heads to the average music lover would listen to over and over again. With the KoMaGa trio, this album is possible,
The KoMaGa Trio features myself and two extraordinarily skillful musicians. Michael Manring who is one of the most innovative electric bassist both in style and technique. And Chris Garcia, who plays tabla and percussion, and is a greatly accomplished percussionist with an incredibly diverse musical background, from rock to East Indian traditional music. With the help of two such amazing artists I feel confident that I will be able to create a cutting edge jazz album with a mind-blowing rhythm section.
Throughout the past eleven years, I have performed in the United States, Japan, Australia, Brazil and Canada, and I have created 12 jazz albums – only two of which were created with the aid of a record label, and in that time more than 10,000 of my CDs have been purchased and enjoyed.
Since the creation of the first trio album “Naked Wonder(2008)” which was funded by my friends, have not had enough financial means to produce any more than duo or solo projects. However the duo projects which I created with different instrumentalists such as Paul McCandless (oboe, english horn, soprano sax, bass clarinet) and my solo projects have been quite successful. Due to this, and the start of the KoMaGa trio in 2019, I feel the strong desire to record another trio album.
For years I would play as a duo with either Michael Manring(bass) or Chris Garcia(tabla, percussion). Then last year I finally got an opportunity to present the three of us together as the KoMaGa Trio for Jazz Night at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. We played all original compositions with a lot of improvisation that creating a night of new discoveries for everyone. Sometimes such content is hard for an audience to emotionally relate to, therefore I was impressed by the size of the audience and even more so by how excited they were with this innovative trio. They loved it, to say the least! So many people asked for CD, but as it was the first performance we had ever done, there were no recordings that we could share with them.
Now I want to create and share a KoMaGa trio album with the world, but I am financially incapable of doing so. Perhaps you are thinking that I could save up a part of our performance profit for future CD production? No way! Without recording, I can not even promote the band. As the Band leader this is my dilemma. How can I proceed?
The answer to that question can be answered by you, through this crowd funding. This is the first time I have used crowd funding so I am not fully aware of how this works. However, I firmly believe that this music production is worth sharing with the world. It is a production that anyone should be proud to be a part of.
In sum, we are trying to raise $9,000 to cover the basic recording expenses, which include:
This is the first time for all of us to kickstart a project, so we can’t exactly predict what going to happen. In the event we do not reach the goal of $9,000.00, we will continue our recording process and finish up our project in hard way. Which would make me very disheartened, as I deeply respect the amazing musicians that are part of this trio. We would continue by asking band members, designer and all involved to donate their time and energy and/or pending their payment until we start making profit out of CD sales. We musicians live for making maximum effort to produce new music every time we play with or without fund. However, exhausting ourselves financially every time we produce a album slows down our productivity. To be able to create music at our best, your support will be helpful.
