BRIEF BUT UNSETTLING HOME VIDEOS is a comic adaptation of slipstream stories that embrace darkness and leave the reader questioning what’s real. It’s an anxious, feverish collection that’s sometimes chilling and always weird.
The stories are pulled out of a short story chapbook I wrote called THE FIRST RULE OF BLACK MAGIC. It’s a collection of flash fiction stories that focus on the intersection of mental illness and magic, anxiety and wonder.
Stories from the collection have been published in literary magazines like Cheap Pop Lit, Molotov Cocktail, and Literary Orphans.
The comic was brought to life by an eclectic creative team, drawing influence from the style of classic horror comics like Eerie, Creepy, and Vampirella. Each story is showcased in a different style. This comic will appeal to people who like comics such as Black Monday Murders and Gideon Falls, or shows like Black Mirror and Castle Rock.
WHAT ARE YOU BACKING?
This campaign will fund a print run of the comic Brief but Unsettling Home Videos. It’s a 30 page, black and white comic that’s printed on 50 lb aged newsprint text for a classic, vintage feel. It will also back a print run of the hereto unpublished chapbook The First Rule of Black Magic (produced in the style of a comic book). The chapbook is a 24 page, full color comic-style book full of art and stories.
The comic will have two covers. Cover A was painted by Joshua David Raymond. He’s a fine artist and watercolor painter who I’ve previously worked with on Hypertrophic Literary and my comic adaptation of When You Bleed to Death.
Cover B will be a Kickstarter exclusive designed by collage artist Zacharya Starke AKA Comic2Canvas. He deconstructs comics to create one of a kind canvas masterpieces and (aside from having two of his pieces in my own home) he’s worked with me on an artist collab/mashup and has been commissioned by Warner Brothers.
The Creative Team:
Thank you for checking out this project. I hope you’ll pick up one of our great rewards and like this and share it with your friends. It means a lot to me to be able to share my work with the world, that’s why all reward tiers include your name on the acknowledgement page of the comic. We can’t make cool things like this without cool people like you to read it. I just hope you like it as much as we do.
