Bold Made is a new and improved twist on the classic card game Old Maid. Our game isn’t about getting stuck with a card. It’s about winning by collecting a team of bold women past and present. Each woman in the deck has made important contributions to her society and to the world at large. The game is fun, of course, but also a powerful way to help kids find fantastic female role models. And what better time to celebrate great women than during Women’s History Month? That’s why we’re running our Kickstarter in March.
Bold Made features original hand-drawn portraits by the talented Filipino artist Kersly Potter.
Bold Made features 40 amazing women in 10 different categories including artists, athletes, activists, astronauts, musicians, inventors, photographers, writers, scientists, and Supreme Court Justices. The hardest part of the whole project has been selecting which bold women to include.
Bold Made replaces the outdated and sexist goal of avoiding the Old Maid card with the addition of the Bold Made card and changing the goal to end the game with the Bold Made card.
While Bold Made can be simple and fun like Old Maid, it can also be played with a strategic twist by adding the included with action cards. This way the game can grow with your kids while also appealing to adults.
Collect three sets of Bold Women and win! Sounds easy, right? Not so fast….
BOLD MADE action cards add a strategic twist to the game keeping it exciting until the last card is played.
We designed Bold Made to help kids imagine all the different kinds of “great” they could become–whether it be a Supreme Court Justice like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a NASA mathematician like Katherine Johnson, or a world champion basketball player like Sue Bird.
More times than not, women’s contributions are sidestepped or miscredited (usually to men). Let’s celebrate the rich history and accomplishments of women and inspire the next generation of the bold!
Let’s face it. Old Maid is a fossil, yet you can still find it on the shelves of almost every large chain retailer in the U.S. Our goal is to get Old Maid out of stores and onto the scrap heap of history.
How did we pick our Bold Made women? That’s been the hardest part! We started with suggestions from friends and family. Now we need your help selecting our final fierce females.
Become part of the Bold Made community. When you back the project at even a $1 level, we will send you updates with a link to offer suggestions on which women we should include in our first edition of Bold Made.
You can play Bold Made much like Old Maid but just with slightly different rules. Additionally, Bold Made comes with action cards for more advanced gameplay. Below is a video of how to play Bold Made with advanced gameplay.
Old Maid became popular in Victorian times when parlor games were all the rage. It’s been a staple of children’s games ever since. Chances are you played it as a kid. But the object of the game—not to get stuck with the old maid, a.k.a. the older unmarried woman—is pretty darn sexist.
I was inspired to create Bold Made by my son. He loves to play all kinds of games. One birthday, he got Old Maid as a gift. I complained—how could such a sexist game still exist? He told me to stop complaining and design a better version. Bold Made was born.
Our game offers an alternative that celebrates amazing women and their contributions to the world. Our goal is for players to have fun while learning about the women in hand.

We feel the risks are relatively low as we shipped our first Kickstarter Card Game for Taco vs Burrito on time and expect to do the same with this one. We have been working with our manufacturer for over 2 years now and feel confident in their consistent work and are excited to see the finished product. We have 95% of the artwork complete and will only be adding a few Bold Made Women to the deck and our graphic designer can easily do this work within a week. For this Kickstarter, we are partnering with a company to fulfill our orders in countries outside of the US and Canada and are excited to be able to offer items in Europe with the VAT already paid.
