Some truck drivers cause extreme amounts of damage and harm to others on the roads when they speed or violate other traffic laws. They may face criminal charges for their actions, and victims can also sue them in civil court to receive compensation for their losses.
Local law enforcement was looking for a truck driver who left the scene of an accident on Interstate 10 Eastbound on San Antonio’s east side.
Truck driver runs away from deadly crash on interstate highway
Police believe that the driver of a tractor trailer was near the 8200 block of I-10 at around 7:30pm on a Monday night. There was heavy traffic in the area, and many vehicles were starting to slow down, but the truck proceeded through the area at a high rate of speed. The trucker started to brake, but collided with a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle and jackknifed on the highway. All lanes were totally blocked by the bed of the truck after the accident.
Several other vehicles were affected by the impact. A Jeep Cherokee nearby rolled over and caused injuries to all of the occupants. The driver of the motorcycle was also killed from the impact. Shortly after the crash, the truck driver exited his vehicle and ran from the scene on foot. He did not attempt to help anyone at the scene, and provided no information to the police or other drivers.
The San Antonio Fire Department said that everyone involved aside from the motorcycle driver sustained only minor injuries and was expected to recover. When apprehended, the driver of the truck will face criminal charges for leaving the scene, failing to render aid, and failure to stop.
Regulations related to commercial vehicles
Truck accidents such as this show the very real possibility of commercial vehicles causing death or serious injuries. This is why workers who have commercial driver’s licenses are much more heavily regulated than normal drivers. They are only allowed to drive at certain hours due to transportation laws and they must renew their credentials at regular intervals. Drivers who fail to do so may be subject to various fines or lose their commercial driving privileges altogether.
Cases against trucking companies and drivers
When these drivers cause injuries or death, both the company responsible for the vehicle and the individual driver may be sued in civil court. Victims can retain an attorney and make defendants pay for medical treatment, lost wages, long term trauma, and other problems which were caused by the driver’s actions.
