All motor vehicle accidents cause some kind of property damage and expenses to the drivers involved. In these situations, it is often best to get legal help and explore the possibility of a civil lawsuit.
A large grain truck was involved in an accident in a rural area just outside of Iowa City.
Vehicles hang off of the side of a bridge after a collision
The truck crashed in Johnson County at about 2 pm on a Tuesday on the edge of a bridge that extends over Old Woman’s Creek.
The Iowa Department of Transportation released an official statement related to the incident. They said that part of Highway 1 near the intersection of Black Diamond Road would remain closed for several hours while traffic was detoured away. Aerial photos showed that the truck was travelling northbound, but after the impact it hit the side guardrails and part of the vehicle was hanging off of the edge of the bridge. The pavement of the southbound lanes also appeared to be damaged.
There were apparently other vehicles involved in the accident, but the news report did not contain any details about the condition of those drivers or any other possible injuries. The condition of the occupants of the cab of the grain truck was unknown as well.
A large vacuum was brought to the scene to pick up grain off of the road and transfer it into another truck that removed the debris from the area.
The aftermath of a motor vehicle accident
Whether a crash involves a large commercial vehicle such as a truck, or another driver who was simply careless, it is important to get legal advice and explore your options afterward. Anyone who is involved should be ready to contact their insurance company and seek medical assistance if necessary. Once the emergency issues have been resolved, it is also advisable to retain legal counsel. Personal injury lawsuits are the only way to pay for large amounts tied to injuries and medical expenses. An attorney can summarize all of these costs in the initial filing of the lawsuit, and then attempt to get this amount from the defendant through a settlement agreement or a jury verdict.
How does a lawyer actually win the case?
After all accidents, the police on the scene will generate a formal accident report. There are opinions in this report regarding how the accident happened and who is at fault. Lawyers use evidence such as this and other documentation and testimony to meet the burden of proof in a civil case and convince the jury that the defendant is responsible for the accident and all injuries.
