International Drive hotel will open to add to an already robust hotel market in Orlando
Universal decided to place a new hotel and resort on the former site of their Wet & Wild attraction. The defunct water park closed in December of 2016, but there are various references to it throughout the hotel, such as recycling the names of prior attractions for custom cocktails available at the hotel bar.
The managing director of the project said that their intention was to attract various kinds of families who are looking for a more affordable place to stay in the area. They anticipate that some families that may have been priced out of high end lodging in the region will stay at the new property.
Part of the hotel was already opened up to reporters and media members before the entire hotel was to be officially available to the public a week later. City tourism leaders were attempting to bring in business despite travel restrictions and other recent concerns. They hope that the area’s theme parks and other attractions have a strong enough allure to keep the flow of tourism and visitors constant.
Three Orlando area hotels were all set to open up within a month of each other, adding a large number of rooms to a city that is already one of America’s main tourist destinations. The new Universal Dockside Hotel will be the fourth largest in Orlando. It will sit at the busy north section of International Drive. Its proximity to the Universal Studio parks will allow for shuttle service back and forth between the hotels and the attractions. The large property will also compete directly with other value hotels nearby, which was a concern for some local business owners.
