The U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of New York recently announced that 11 members of the 5-9 Brims, “a violent set of the Bloods street gang,” have been charged with crimes “related to their participation in a criminal enterprise that made money through narcotics trafficking and financial scamming, and maintained its power through acts of violence, including murder.” Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, has categorized the 5-9 Brims as “a violent criminal organization that has terrorized residents of Brooklyn and Queens” by engaging in violent acts in public places, trafficking narcotics, and participating in financial schemes.
Donoghue has said his office, along with Homeland Security Investigations, New York, and the New York City Department of Investigation worked together to bring down the gang members for the alleged crimes they committed. The members, which are a part of a much larger gang, are accused of wanting to make money “with as little effort as possible,” which has resulted in them engaging in credit card fraud. However, they still “maintained their tried and true drug trafficking and murder activity,” according to FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney, Jr.
Who are the 5-9 Brims?
As previously mentioned, the 5-9 Brims is a set of the Bloods street gang. It operates in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, however, gang activity isn’t only limited to those areas, says the Attorney’s Office. Many of the gang members have not only recognized for committing acts of violence, but also “murder, robbery, assault, and drug-trafficking and fraud.” Officials say that between January 2012 and December 2019, the 11 defendants allegedly committed crimes to “further the interests of the gang, including earning money for the gang’s members, and enhancing the gang’s position with respect to rival criminal organizations.”
The Attorney’s Office charged several of the defendants with “racketeering conspiracy for agreeing to commit crimes on behalf of the gang, including drug trafficking, identification and access device fraud, as well as multiple acts involving murder.” Many of the defendants have also been charged with narcotics and firearms-related offenses. Nearly all of the crimes the defendants have been charged with carry some sort of prison sentence along with hefty fines, fees, and possible probation which means they are going to want to hire a Brooklyn, NY criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible.
