HERES THE FACTS:
Over the last decade, the number of homeless people in the nation surpassed half a million… 552,830 to be exact. Including 200,000 who are completely unsheltered, living on the streets, encampments, or other open places.
In December 2018, the State of Michigan determined there were over 8,000 homeless people. Statistics show the long-term and reoccurring number of homeless people grew 11% in Michigan and also increased on a national level.
PROBLEM:
There is a huge homeless population on both a local and national level, and the vast majority experience significant barriers to self-care and personal hygiene, including limited access to clean showers and hand washing facilities which lead to other monumental epidemics.
Access to adequate sanitation infrastructure, including toilets, showers and hand washing facilities, has long been identified as a precursor for personal hygiene and good health. Individuals experiencing extreme poverty, especially those experiencing homelessness, face reduced access to sanitation facilities and difficulties engaging in health-promoting self-care activities as a result. Reduced availability of public toilets in the United States in the last decade has a disproportionately negative impact on hygiene among individuals who utilize these facilities for daily self-care.
HOW WE WILL HELP:
Our individually packaged XL shower sheet will provide the equivalent of taking a shower. The user will be able to wipe down the face, body and hands with one towelette to sanitize, cleanse and deodorize. The easy to use, convenient application will assist when sanitation facilities aren’t readily available, and in-turn help increase self care and hygiene.
Our mission statement is: “ONE AT A TIME,” and that’s exactly how we will approach this project.
