It’s not only nearing the end of the year… but the end of a very eventful DECADE! It was jam-packed with new pricey technology, cat memes, cliches, cult movie classics, celebrity drama, and over-used slang. But somehow, those joyous times of the 80’s just keep creeping into my head. Before being thrown headfirst into another style-defining era, I wanna relish in the oh-so colorful times of the past. I wanna daydream about the first neon green fanny pack I ever owned and bedazzled; the dozens of friendship bracelets I made at summer camp and gave to myself; and how those jellies I wanted so bad, were satisfyingly glued to my toes in the high heat of summer. As the decades fly by, when are we gonna take the time out to celebrate the happiest one of all…and with a commemorative tarot deck?!?
Of course it’s the perfect time. I can’t wait to be distracted from international conflict and stammering economic reports by the soothing memories of singing Smurfs and the Care Bear Stare. Not to mention that I’m a tarot addict too. I refuse to count the number of decks that I own but I know for sure that I need another one. I’ve been patiently waiting for someone to design an 80’s deck but it seems that I’m going to be the one to lovingly do it. Not my first deck design by the way – but definitely one of my favorites so far.
Bit by bit the hilarious ideas for card images started coming to me. Each one making me giggle harder and harder until I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer. I started writing them down and sketching the characters and layouts… then the general design started to feel fully developed. And with a few carefully selected retro photo filters, they were undeniably and totally 80’s.
The I Love the 80’s tarot deck is a wicked, nostalgia-filled deck full of your favorite 80’s pop stars, colorful clutch gear, and rockin’ memories. With every card you flip in a retro reading, this deck is designed to help channel funky fresh intuitive guidance for yourself and your clients. Be rekindled with that part of yourself that was “totally happen’en” back in the day. You know exactly what I’m taking about ;)
As a graphic designer and overall perfectionist I value things like accuracy, eye-catchiness, and the ability to tell a compelling story (even from a different era) through visual arts. As a fellow Divination Diva, I love symbolic yet unique images that can make us laugh especially when delivering heavy messages (like “you are going through a super rough transformation and need to not care about outward appearances” … cleverly said with drawings of torn boy band posters and empty hair spray bottles). The deck is a balance of both, keeping you entertained, but also functioning as a usable Rider-Waite based tarot deck for personal and professional readings. Yes, you can look at the pictures on the cards and understand the general message of the card pretty easily (thank goodness!).

Now that we know who I’m not… I’m stoked to tell you about who I am.
First and foremost I must admit that initially, I didn’t like the 80’s at all (whaaaaat?!?). Yes, I know. As blasphemous as that sounds, how would you feel if you were traumatized by witnessing stuffed animals that moved and talked when clearly they should do no such thing – thanks Rollerskating Bear & Teddy Ruxpin! After years of therapy, I realized that outside of those aforementioned unnatural phenomena, that there was at least one good thing that was made in the 80’s… me :). Holding on to this one golden truth bomb, the rest of the decade’s treasures welcomed me with open arms and beckoned me to explore the joyous memories that I almost forgot to remember. The 80’s were BAD… like, Michael Jackson Bad. And I’m so happy we rekindled our fondness of each other through the creation of this tarot deck.
This project is my passion and something very special I love to do.
This is a low-risk campaign for backers. The biggest challenge is met! All of the 78 card designs have been conceptualized and/or sketched and are ready to be finalized, formatted and sent to print. Luckily, I’m an experienced tarot deck designer (5 decks designs under my belt thus far) however, with a need for larger quantities we have carefully selected a new printer to work with this time around (exciting!). Post-funding, the decks will be sent to the printer and produced in 2-4 weeks and shipped to me for a final personal touch. This is how you know that I’m serious about this work. It’s very close to my heart.
