My name is Giulio Speranza, I am a professional photographer and a PhD in Geology. Through this campaign I ask for your support to allow me to finalize my photographic project on the Gran Sasso d’Italia, a very important job for me.
In practice, during the last two years, every beat of my heart has been spent to realize the project and I am now in the process of concretizing my love story with the Gran Sasso in a book, so that I can share it with everyone you.
The story, or research if you like, started to sprout in reality many years ago, already during my childhood, when I frequented these mountains in the wake of my passion for nature. My university studies have therefore given further life to my desire to see and learn about these places, until, thanks to photography, and in particular the analogical large format, and the use of black and white, going to the mountains has become a ever more intense and engaging experience, which allows me to pour into every image that I realize everything myself, all that I am and love.
So that all this can become a book, made and printed in Italy according to the highest quality criteria, I need all the car you want to give me. Any contribution, small or large, will help me to realize my vision of the Gran Sasso of Italy and I am sure that with your support this project will be successful.
In fact I will never stop photographing these mountains, the Gran Sasso and the Central Apennines, thus continuing to realize my love for research, photography and the mountains. This my first book, which I will implement thanks to your help, is like a solemn promise, which I make to all of you, to continue on this path.
Supporting me in the realization of the book you will be my traveling companions; holding it in your hands it will be for you like walking with me on the paths, and for me like having you next to me to support me along my path. I count on you, thank you!

The Apennines are the mountain range that forms the backbone of the Italian Peninsula. The highest and most spectacular mountain range of the chain is undoubtedly the Gran Sasso of Italy, in Abruzzo, whose highest peak, the Corno Grande, which reaches 2912m asl, is the highest elevation of the Apennines and is home to the southernmost glacier of Europe, the Cauldron. In addition to the undoubted beauty of the landscapes, the presence of the National Park and various protected areas and still countless cultural attractions, this is the mountain range that I know and frequent since I was a child, because there are the origins of my paternal family. The Apennines are the mountain chain that forms the thorn of the Italian Peninsula. The highest and most spectacular mountain group is the Gran Sasso Range, located in Abruzzo, whose highest peak, the Big Horn, reaches 2912m asl and hosts the European southernmost glacier, the “Calderone”. Other than the actual beauty of these landscapes, this is the area that I know since my childhood, because of the origins of my father’s family. This project has been a way of rediscovering these beautiful mountains, thanks to a new awareness and an approach to the landscape.

I did my photographic research on the Gran Sasso of Italy following what in recent years has become my main specialization in the photographic field, ie using moving body cameras (optical benches) and large format black and white film. The practical and mental harmony with these devices allows me to produce images with peculiar characteristics, according to my idea of photographic representation of the mountain, which has a documentary approach but characterized by a decisive and personal aesthetic. Using tools like these also forced me to change the classic “hiking” approach to the mountain, giving me the opportunity to approach the observation and representation of the landscape in a completely new way.
In the super-fast world of today, where production, use, and the attention given to images are fleeting actions that last no more than a few seconds, I chose an “old” but at the same time “working method” new ”for mountain landscape photography. A technical, slow, rational, artisanal approach if we want, which involves the production of a limited number of images that arise from a particular harmony with the subject. This is combined with the choice of black and white: leaving out the chromatic component and going directly to the formal essence of things is the language I prefer to represent reality in general and mountains in particular.
I worked mainly in the 4×5 “format, but also in 5×7” and rarely 8×10 “(10.2 * 12.7, 13 * 18 and 20.2 * 25.4cm). I personally develop the negatives and then proceed to the scanning and processing in a clear camera on the PC.

I have chosen to realize the great Saso of Italy Range following my main area of expertise within professional photography, ie using large format view cameras and monochrome films. The mental harmony with these instruments allows me to take precise, in brief, to fulfill my idea of a documentary, but aesthetic-oriented, photography. Moreover, using large format cameras, forced me to change my approach to mountain landscape observation and representation. So, I had an “old” but, in the superfast world on nowadays, “new” approach that leads me to be technical, slow, rational subject.
Furthermore, I have opted for the black and white language, to remove the chromatic component to get the core of the subject. I tend to prefer high impact images, characterized by enhanced contrast that I get using specific filters at shooting time. After that, I develop my own pictures and then I proceed with digitalization and further enhancement.
I’ve worked mainly in the 4×5 “format, sometimes in the 5×7” format, seldom in the 8×10 “format.

After more than two years of research on the best points of view, study of the territory, excursions and photo sessions, many kilometers traveled on foot on the paths and by car to reach the starting points of the excursions, I can really say that I have come a long way and spent a lot of money. I am now very close to the goal, but the economic effort required to print the book as I wanted and thought of it from the beginning is not sustainable for me. So here I ask for your support to allow me to overcome this last obstacle. The target set is how much is needed to print 400 copies of the final product of my research, so that I can share it with you all.

I do not wish, in this context, to thank all the people who, for various reasons, helped me to get here. There will be a way to do it, in the book and in other locations.
Instead, I would like to mention here the one who, no doubt, helped me the most, without whom I would never have reached this point: Urs Bernhard. His speech, now more than a year ago, has in fact addressed my effort, hitherto a little vague, on the right track. This alone would be enough. But since then I have continually benefited from his experience: editing the project, searching for the publisher, consulting on the texts, on crowdfunding, on creating the print layout … I could go on. All with my same passion and transport. Here, perhaps the friendship with him, because of this it is, is the first real result of my research, besides the photos, beyond the knowledge of the mountains, to have met people like him on my way.
Daniela Haushaelter, Barbara Wolff, Samuele Piccoli, Johannes Bockemuehl and Ryan Gillespie deserve a mention here. Their support allowed me to start working in the right way, made me understand that I was on the right track and helped me overcome the difficult moments I encountered along the way.
And now, friends you are reading, it’s up to you. Many have supported me so far, but without your help I will not be able to reach the goal, the realization of the book. I recommend you count on you!
