Surfers Collective Mag Issue 01: TIMEisNOW
ABOUT.
Surfers Collective (SC) is an international platform for creative surfers. The platform was founded with the aim to inspire people with beautiful artwork, craft and writing of the talented surf community, as well as their creative expression in the water.
THE MAGAZINE.
The first issue of SC – TIMEisNOW – features the visions, stories and passions of a group of 20 artists – ranging from photographers and craftsmen to engaged environmentalists and surf-inspired writers.
They explore our most precious gift of TIME – the importance of living in the moment, becoming more conscious of the fragility of our planet and valuing real-life connections – through a range of personal narratives, opinion pieces, poems, illustration and photography.
Contributors: Felix Misslin, Aljaz Babnik, Jeremy Soma, Sami Lensu, Changing Tides Foundation (Jianca Lazarus), Lena Sonrie, Byranna Bradley, Filipe Mariano, Johny Surfart, Monster Surfboards (Eduardo Mon), Sebastian Drews, SEPTEMBER. Surfers: Andy Nieblas, Lola Mignot, Ivy Thomas, Leah Dawson, Tim Latte, Ria Mondo, Lydia Ricard and many more.
So here we are today, raising money to print our first magazine:
· 20 artists sharing various stories, opinions, poems, personal narratives, art and photography, all centered around the topic of TIME
· Over 200 pages, full color, 100% recycled paper (210x270mm)
· Postcard on cover page
· 4,20€ of each sold issue will be donated to the post-production of the environmental short film TIMEisNOW (starring surfers Andy Nieblas & Ria Mondo).
TIMEisNOW SHORT FILM.
Inspired by the concept of the short film TIMEisNOW, directed by Aljaz Babnik, we decided to launch the magazine in anticipation of and as an accompaniment to the film as two projects that are inextricably linked by their shared exploration of the importance of time. These projects will communicate the inevitability that everything we do today will have profound effects on us and on our future generations.
The short film TIMEisNOW, a year in the making, was filmed in Africa, far away from mass media consumption. It delivers a beautiful and thoughtful message about how we, humans, always take from nature but don’t give back.
The fictional surf environmental film, featuring surfers Andy Nieblas and Ria Mondo, can be seen at film festivals next year and on Vimeo Demand with visuals and insights shared in the upcoming SC //TIMEisNOW mag.
REWARDS.
Surfers collective mag X organic cotton bag / TIMEisNOW shirt (S, M, L, XL) / skateboard deck / multiple mags / advert / Monster Surfboards, twin fish
Monster Surfboards, short twin: It´s essentially a MUST in small daily surf fun. Generates TONS of speed with enough control to still draw lines. Wide and short, kinda flat also, but with a modern touch: slight single concave to a double that ends on a slight vee. It means you won’t miss that much your shortboard. Medium boxy rails to a really thin tail provide speed and control. Available in different colors and sizes / polished panel and wet sanded bottom and rails.
YOUR CONTRIBUTION.
To reach our goal and print 1000 copies we need to raise 5700€. Every contribution above this amount will help us to increase the number of printed issues.
TIMEisNOW is nearly finished. We have been working on the magazine since the beginning of this year and on the film for more than one year. We are now ready for printing and postproduction. With your help, we can print, package and deliver the magazine to you and we will be able to finance the post-production for the film (editing, music score, distribution, film festival applications). For each mag contribution, 4,20€ will be donated to the post-production of the film.
HELP US HERE & NOW.
We thank you a million times for your trust and donations. As soon as our Kickstarter campaign reaches our expected goal and the end of our Kickstarter campaign has come, we will go ahead with printing and will be delivering the first printed issue in February 2020.
We are planning to develop a yearly publication to continue sharing the stories, visions and art of many more creative souls.
THANK YOU.
Countless hours of our free time were spent developing the magazine and the film. Big thanks to all the contributors for delivering their beautiful words and photos that make the magazine unique. All the contributors have taken their time and passion to be part of our first magazine, not driven by money, but by creating something meaningful together and sharing it with others.
WHO WE ARE.
My name is Marie-Therese and I founded Surfers Collective 2 years ago with the mission to showcase the amazing art and creative expressions of the talented people in the surfing world. The platform was a result of my passion and inspiration for ocean-inspired people. I am super stoked to run this Kickstarter campaign to (hopefully) publish this first magazine issue with a lot of amazing contributions from crazy talented & inspiring people.
Vero (also known as @fancy.pants.adventures) is our sunshine & creative graphic designer. She has designed the whole magazine, giving it the look & feel that we admire.
While working on the magazine in Morocco, the lovely Lily crossed our way, talented writer and photographer, who has become a valued team member, helping us with proofreading the stories and words of our international contributors.
Aljaz Babnik has directed the short film TIMEisNOW (and edited our Kickstarter video) and I am forever grateful for having worked with him over the last years on putting our ideas into reality.

Now it’s down to a very small team to make this project happen. We appreciate all your patience and support. We will do our best to achieve the printing date in February, so that you can hold the magazine (and the rewards) in your hands very soon. The delivery time of the surfboards might be different to the delivery time of the magazine and will be communicated.
