About

Welcome back to Miskatonic High, the comic series about the students who take on the monsters of H.P. Lovecraft and their small-town high school…they’re just not sure which is worse.

We’ve successfully kickstarted the first four issues, but don’t worry, you don’t need to have read the previous issues or the works of H.P. Lovecraft to enjoy this series.

The story so far

In issue #1, we learned that in the rustic hills of a small New England Berkshire town lies the prestigious Miskatonic High School. When the Community Service Club went on a field trip, they were launched back to ancient Egypt and were nearly killed by an evil wizard and his tentacle monster. They escaped back to our century, but things will never be the same.

In issue #2, for Sarah Clarke, life at Miskatonic High had never been easy, being a poor, rural outcast. But when her friends came to help her on the family apple orchard, secrets better left unknown were unearthed and she and her classmates experienced a terror in the dark.

In issue #3, we saw that Ren Santos has it all: beauty, a sense of humor and burgeoning fame. She also has a secret that stares her in the face every moment of every day. That secret wouldn’t stay hidden for long once she realized that she was being spied on.  When her peeping tom sent two classmates to the hospital, Ren came to realize the dangers of  being idolized.

In issue #4, Matt “Crash” Williams always won at hockey by going for the goal. But when he and his friends found themselves in a war between ancient druids and terrifying saurians, he’ll find out learned how far he had to fall.

Now, in issue #5, Alex Davidson is a busy girl, getting straight A’s, running a presidential campaign and helping Sarah with her love life. But when she volunteers at the local library, she’ll find herself sucked into a dark world of eldritch magic that threatens to tear her apart! Can she, and her friends, survive the monster hiding in their midst?

It’s a full-sized comic, 24 pages and in color. Available in print or in digital PDF.

Reviews are in

Um, now that we’ve convinced you to spend lots of money, maybe you should make sure it’s halfway decent! Here’s some of what people have been saying about the issue and the series:

Michael Logarta of Goshdarn Geeky said:

“In part inspired by Lovecraft’s The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, Miskatonic High #5 interweaves dreamland sequences with various story snippets, and in doing so doles out the pieces to a grand puzzle.

“…as you progress through the issue, things start falling into place, until you’re ultimately left with the satisfaction of having solved a fascinating Lovecraftian mystery.

“Piece by piece, writer Mike Shea and artist Ryan Mendoza are building an  extraordinary world filled with mysteries begging to be solved.” Read the full review

Jenn Marshall of Sirens of Sequentials:

“Miskatonic High is a fun story that balances everything you want in a good horror story. There is some gore, but not so much that you get overwhelmed. The jokes are funny, but they don’t make the story feel like a parody of something else. It was well thought out, and I cannot wait to see where it is going to go next.”

“The monsters are very Lovecraftian. … Because they have that Lovecraftian feel to them, the monsters really are both written and drawn in a way that affected my Lizard Brain.” Read the full review

The Pullbox called it “the bastard lovechild of John Hughes  & H.P. Lovecraft.” (The real scary part is I get the John Hughes reference.)

Here’s a bit from Paul’s review: “It brings a mismatched group of high schoolers together, throwing them against evil the likes of which  you’d find in a dusty tome full of impossible to pronounce names. The beauty is in the execution. Despite some pretty heavy themes — mounting madness, eternal torment, human sacrifice — Mike Shea’s story stays fairly tongue in cheek. [Artist Ryan Mendoza] knows how to get his Lovecraft on.” Read the full review

Rewards

We have half a billion rewards to choose from (we may have rounded up a little on the half a billion number):

Add ons

Add ons are kind of complicated on Kickstarter, but we’ll make this pretty simple. We have a number of items that you can add on to your order but don’t fit into any of our reward bundles. To request them you just need to up your pledge by the amount of the add on. Say you want to add another physical copy of issue #5 (who wouldn’t?), you would just need to add an extra $5 to your pledge.

When you select your reward there is an option to “Manage your pledge.” Simply select that and add the extra $5. You can also adjust this later if you change your mind and decide you need 13 additional copies (who wouldn’t?). When we send you the backer survey after the Kickstarter ends, there will be a question asking if you selected any add ons and if so to let us know what you would like. If you don’t add on enough to your pledge, we’ll send you a PayPal invoice to cover the extra (sorry, we can’t charge the extra through Kickstarter after the campaign is over).

It’s a lot simpler than it sounds. If you have any questions, just send us a message. So, here’s what we have to offer:

We also offer the very popular vVurMzflessshhh Editions – premium formatted books and fine art prints for the comic and music industry –  as add ons. vVurMzflessshhh Publishing was founded in 2006 by VENIEN, an early pioneer of the USBM music scene and co-creator of the legendary band VON (one of North American’s first Black Metal bands in 1987).

VENIEN has been a strong friend of our comic from the very beginning and has graciously agreed to illustrate and produce exclusive collectibles available to you as add ons to our Kickstarter. (To be honest, I just wanted to keep them all to myself, but he said we had to sell them and I know better than to argue with someone whose day job includes the terms “black” and “metal”.)

These premium giclèe prints and special edition comic are extremely limited, so they’re being offered on a first-come/first-go basis. Once they’re gone, they’ll never be offered or re-printed again.

As an added bonus, each collectible comes with a download of an exclusive digital edition of a fully re-worked pulp version of a Miskatonic High issue (vVurMzflessshhh Edition). Completely re-designed in homage to the pulp fiction and golden era of H.P. Lovecraft’s work in Weird Tales.

Give it a try

Here are a few pages to give you a taste:

Attribution

“Hey guys, who did that amazing music in your video?”

Glad you asked, it’s a track called Dune by Jahzzar, which is available on the Free Music Archive. We edited the track to fit our video (which is also to come).

Risks and challenges

The cover and pages for the issue are completed and are just waiting to go to print. We have a quote from ComixWellspring, which specializes in on-demand comic printing and fulfillment (and who we have used for three issues now). The pages will be sent in late November and the issues take approximately two weeks to print. It will take another week or so for all of the items to ship. You should receive the rewards around mid- to late-December, but we will send out alerts on the schedule as we have them. There’s no guarantee you’ll receive them in time for the holidays, but if it’s a gift, let us know and we’ll do everything we can to expedite it.

So, really, the biggest risk is a witch deciding to abduct you and use you for manual labor. But don’t worry it can’t be any worse than working at a fast food joint.
