SYNOPSIS
A sweet potato vendor stalks with his presence and – above all – with the spooky howl that his car emits, a lonely and decadent exotic dancer. The vendor is obsessed but feels her out of reach and just follows and observes, causing the rejection and anger of the dancer who in her work will face a dangerous situation that will take the story to an unexpected outcome.
Page; Ingpen. p.235)
CINEMATOGRAPHIC APPROACH
The inspiration for this story – and the central character of it – is the figure of the sweet potato vendor who, at nightfall, travels with his car multiple neighborhoods of Mexico City, emitting the characteristic whistle with which he announces his presence .
It is precisely this whistle, which penetrates without invitation into the homes of the inhabitants of the city, ultimately, the main character and the decisive element in the story.
In itself the whistle has multiple semantic layers, of which perhaps the deepest is in the form of a mythological element when presented as a melancholic lament reminiscent of the Banshee of the Celtic tradition and that has a parallel in Mexico in the “La llorona” legend.
“This terrible and semi-human howl will wake every sleeper and will be heard above the strongest wind.” Banshee (Encyclopedia of things that never existed. Page; Ingpen. P.235)
Juan Eduardo Cirlot. Ed. Siruela. p.314)
THEME ASSESSMENT
The story is an exploration of the issue of harassment, making a counterpoint between two opposite forms.
For symbolic purposes, harassment is reduced to looking … or simply seeing, where opposite meanings also emerge.
“Looking is traditionally identified with knowing (knowing, but also possessing). On the other hand, the look is, like the teeth, the defensive barrier of the individual against the surrounding world; ”Look (Dictionary of Symbols. Juan Eduardo Cirlot. Ed. Siruela. P.314)
The vendor (of sweet potatoes)
He is a young man of little more than 20 years who came from outside the city. He barely survives selling sweet potatoes at night. He advances sweaty and humbly dressed pushing his car. He is obsessed with the dancer’s desire, but he is too shy to approach effectively, so he just watches and follows her.
The dancer (stripper)
She is a mature woman of decaying beauty. She is lonely and aware of her own inexorable decline, which leads her to accept less paid jobs in gentlemen’s clubs. Even so she overcomes and, bravely, every night she goes out into the dark of the city and the club to earn something to survive. She is independent and strong, knows how to overcome adversity.
Salas (the boss)
He is a thin but strong man in his 50s. He considers women objects of pleasure and is accustomed to possessing them using blackmail and his power within the club. He is a bit impotent and arouses using violence.
VISUAL AND SOUND CONCEPT
The visual world of the story is very close to that of the film noir where shadows predominate. The lighting is dramatic and emphasizes silhouettes. The color palette consists of black, and orange and greenish tones emitted by the public luminaires of sodium and mercury vapor. The characters are partially illuminated by side light and shadows with textures fall on them.
The sound design should emphasize especially the fearsome and supernatural character of the whistle of the sweet potato car that is as close as possible to the sound of a howl or scream and should be a very strong presence throughout history.
