ABOUT THE PROJECT
“LEWIS AND HARRIS “
‘Lewis and Harris” make up the largest part the Outer Hebrides, the Archipel which is located in the Atlantic around 60km north west of the shores of Scotland. The ocean, cold as ice, presents itself in all shades of blue, reaching from a light blue to a royal blue then an hysterical cyan which fades into a grey blue while its white froth drapes itself around the rocky coastline. The ceaseless roaring of the wind covers the landscape like a blanket. Trees and bushes are a rare find but, surprisingly, the odd palm tree pops up now and again in some of the front yards across the island. Vegetation is limited on the Outer Hebrides as peat, moors and the naked, black, shimmering red rocks take centre stage on this barren land.
Alongside the capital city of Stornaway, hamlets and little courtyards are found scattered across the island. The characteristic monotonous architecture made up of sandy brown and grey waterproof concrete is functional not designer based. On occasion though, a bright yellow or red rooftop will peek out from the mossy brown landscape.
With “Lewis and Harris” we want to pay hommage to the stunning landscapes we found on our travels there.
ABOUT US
We are Philipp Schmidt and Vianca Reinig two photographers based in Hamburg, Germany. Last year from around September to November we took a couple of trips to travel to the Isle of Lewis and Harris. The photographs we took on that trip are now being turned into a photobook published by KERBER Verlag in Germany.
You can follow Philipps and Viancas work on our websites or on Instagram vianca and philipp
ABOUT THE BOOK
In the photobook “Lewis and Harris” we focus on that exact landscape and the surroundings of the Outer Hebrides. In a series of landscape photographs you will get an insight into the ancient, rough beauty of the landscape with its organic shapes and colours. Complementing these is a selection of architectural photographs concentrating on the functional elements of the surroundings which are made and used by the people who call these archaic surroundings their home.
The preface is written bei Donald Murray, a writer from the Isle of Lewis.
ABOUT THE LAYOUT
In the layout, the photographs are in chronological order without gaps and ending in on the mid line of each page, the next merging over the bind to complete the next page. There are no breaks. Colour, light and landscape change rapidly, almost resembling a movie. By constantly altering the perspectives, from wide distance landscape shots to focus on small details, it mirrors how one experiences these landscapes whilst travelling. Occasionally some photographs are rotated against the horizon or cut off to emphasize the dynamic movement.
The observer is taken on a journey, moving across the county along with the book.
The Design and Layout of “Lewis and Harris” was done by Felix Link , who also helped us narrow down out the photography to the essential selection.

WHY DID WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
After we spend a couple of months on our travels and the this year on an exhibtion with some of our Scotland photos and realising the photobook, we have unfortunatly erased our budget. Even though we are getting published through a publishing house, we still have to carry some of the production and print costs ourselves.
Thats why we need your help. To carry the production costs for the book and also, financials aside, spread the word on this beautiful part of the World.
Kickstarter provides a way for artists and creators ro reach out to their communities to fund their projects. For us, it is a way to cover the print costs and everything else that comes with producing a photobook (author, graphic designer etc ). As a thank you we are offering you, on top of the book, a selection of FineArt prints of your choice and every package will get two postcards on top. Here are sample images of the rewards.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

We have a very tight time schedule.
When our Kickstart Campagne will start, the book will already be printed which means that when our crowdfunding goal is reached, we can start shipping as soon as possible. This also means though that the risks are very real and we would be stuck with tremendous costs.
The good thing about it is that, if we do get it financed the Book will already be on your way just in time for Christmas, if you are still looking for a present.
So tell your friends, family, Scotland fans and anybody who might be interested.
We really appreciate your support and your faith in us!:)
