CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext
CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext will be a publication that resumes a large research about the state of the art of young Architecture practices in Europe.
WHO WE ARE
Carnets is a research project started two years ago by eight architecture students from IUAV University of Venice. The aim is to investigate the current landscape of Architecture in Europe, after the 2008 economical crisis, through interviews, talks, round tables and workshops. The protagonists of this research are 30 young architecture offices from around Europe.
The main purpose of the research is to investigate and discuss the conditions that surround the architect’s figure, practice and role in the context of the contemporary world: its relationship to society, history and media through personal experiences, in the belief that Architecture is just a pretext.
Throughout the two years of the completed research, Carnets has mainly consisted of an editorial project in the form of two fanzines, which have been distributed for free within IUAV University of Venice in two consecutive academic years. The two fanzines were composed of 15 folded A4 each, and each A4 paper issue, published weekly, containing a written interview to one architecture office, with a drawing of the practice’s workspace. Students collected them progressively in order to form their personal Carnets.
Besides the fanzine, the project was completed through the promotion of several events:
Furthermore, Carnets has been invited to take part in several events and round tables of discussion: Fey Arts Festival, po·mo·stroika – Postmodern Theories, Practices and Histories, New Generations – Atlas of emerging practices, CSU in motion within Unfolding Pavilion.
The book CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext will embody and narrate the main project’s content, as well as some further extra content:
In order to obtain the best possible result, we’ve decided to team up with graphic design office M-L-XL, based in Venice. The book will be carefully curated with the aim to reflect the research in the best way possible:
The book will be printed by Grafiche Veneziane, published and distributed from Anteferma Edizioni
The book will be published in mid-December 2019, so expect to have it under your Christmas tree!

CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext
CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext sarà un libro con l’obiettivo di riassumere una ricerca sull’attuale scenario di giovani studi di Architettura in Europa.
CHI SIAMO
New Generations – Atlas of emerging practices, CSU in motion within Unfolding Pavilion.
CARNETS – Architecture Is Just a Pretext conterrà al suo interno:

The demand and the dynamics belonging to the editorial market in the architectural spheres poses themselves the challenge to produce a thrilling product, able to encounter the main architectural discipline’s questions.
The crowdfunding campaign has a goal set below the total budget required for the project production, figuring as part of a wider funding project. The project will be realised anyway, depending from several funding sources.
Hence, given the nature of the project, in the form of a book publication, the final result may differ from the images shown.
