Banke Alawaye
In conjunction with the Decade of Women launch of the global #Hackquantum Worldwide Series and Fintech Worldwide’s first Blockchain Conference in Nigeria https://www.blockchainafrica.com, Dr. Jane Thomason, Global Ambassador, Abt Associates, and recipient of the Decade Of Women first Quantum Impact Champion award and Digital Frontier Women award, honoured a leading Nigerian digital pioneer. The honoree was selected for her pioneering work at the forefront of digital thought leadership, contribution to advancing women’s equity and pushing the boundaries of technological innovation for social impact.
Banke Alawaye, from CodeLagos, is an expert in exploiting digital tools for business growth and productivity. With over 20 years of work experience with many businesses, she’s been helping organisations make the best of digital tools for years. She was country manager at Praekelt International, a leading Pan-African digital agency, leading operations in East and West Africa. Her work experience spans investment banking, software development, management consulting and digital marketing. Her work at Praekelt exposed her to social impact projects and applying mobile solutions to development problems. This included serving as program manager on HelloMAMA, a Maternal Health Project in Nigeria, MAMAConnect, a project that provides life-saving health information using satellite technology and the UNICEF U-Reporter Project. Banke holds a B.Sc in Computer Science, a Masters in Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School, Scotland and a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management from Pan African University’s Enterprise Development Centre.
Banke is currently the Program Manager for CodeLagos, an ambitious initiative to teach 1 million Lagosians how to code by 2020. She serves on the advisory board for Girl Code Academy and Codefest Nigeria. She is also the founder of Girls-in-Glasses, an initiative to identify women techpreneurs and support their growth.
In accepting the award, Banke said “I am honoured and proud to be named a Digital Frontier Woman. It’s a privilege to be part of a groundbreaking program like CodeLagos and to have the opportunity to impact lives. I’m really looking forward to working with Decade of Women to further the cause of women in technology.”
In commenting, Dr Jane Thomason said “I am humbled and honoured by the work of Banke and other exceptional women in Nigeria and the African continent. Her drive and determination has already created tremendous impact for women. In harnessing the energy and commitment of extraordinary women such as Banke, we will create a powerful global movement in the Decade Of Women to create exponential impact for women.”
The formal presentation of the awards will take place in New York at an exclusive private reception at the United Nations during the United Nationals General Assembly in September.
