BOSTON — IBC 2017 (Stand 7.F04). axle Video, the pioneer of affordable “radically simple” media management, is launching axle ai™, software which makes it possible to automatically index and search vast amounts of video, image and audio content. A modular solution, axle ai can leverage new artificial intelligence technologies and toolsets as they become available.
The company itself premiered at IBC in 2012, receiving an IBC Best of Show award for bringing simplicity and low cost to a segment which had previously required expensive, complex enterprise solutions. As a result, content owners around the world including Reuters and CBS, as well as hundreds of corporate and university media teams, have found it possible to corral and work with previously unmanageable amounts of media. Even with axle’s accessible browser interface, however, tagging the media was still largely a manual process. Now, with rapid recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning power can perform this process automatically. axle ai brings that power to those budget-conscious smaller and midsize teams who have large amounts (tens or hundreds of terabytes) of video and related content.
axle ai is available either as software, starting at $1,995, which runs on standard Mac hardware, or a self-contained software/hardware appliance, starting at $6,995. Both options provide integrations with leading cloud AI engines; the appliance also includes embedded processing power that supports direct visual search for thousands of hours of footage with no cloud connectivity required. The open architecture of axle ai means that new third-party capabilities can be added at any time, a key capability in the rapidly evolving technology of artificial intelligence. This is consistent with axle’s open approach to local and cloud storage of not modifying stored media in any way, which reduces investment risk and extends customers return on investment as they add this key capability.
In addition to the new axle ai configurations, axle is also announcing a number of key new product/partner initiatives at the show:
1) Together with Wasabi, a disruptive cloud storage company also based in Boston, axle is launching the axle Media Cloud, the first 100% cloud-based option for radically simple media management. The offering is available immediately and is priced at $400/month (330 Euros/mo) for 10 terabytes of managed storage,
10 user accounts, and up to 10 terabytes of downloaded media per month. The solution has clear advantages in cost and capacity when compared with traditional cloud-based MAMs. In addition, all of axle ai’s automated tagging capabilities are simple add-ons to this system.
2) axle Embedded is a new version of axle software that can be run directly on storage solutions from a range of industry partners. The first announced partners for this solution are G-Technology, a division of Western Digital (Hall 7.J31, Global Distribution), and Panasas (Hall 8.C07). Both will be demonstrating the solution at their stands at IBC. Pricing begins at $3,995 (3,295 Euros) retail for a 5-user license. As with axle Media Cloud, all of axle ai’s automated tagging and search capabilities are simple add-ons to this system.
3) Extending its ongoing partnership with Avid (Hall 7 J.20), axle is launching axle MXF, a software module that supports Avid MXF Op-Atom media directly. The product is available immediately for axle ai, axle Media Cloud, and axle Embedded. The axle MXF solution can export subclips selected in axle’s browser interface to Avid’s Media Composer editing software Axle MXF is priced at $2,000 (1,650 Euros).
