Working in a diverse school district is something that I value as a teacher every day. My students come from families, cultures, countries and experiences that are all unique and drive me as an educator to continue working towards engaging them and their differences within the classroom community. Ours is a school that is located in a neighborhood community where my students walk to school.
I often have generations of students from the same families and get to connect with them on a personal level as well as build my teacher relationship with them and their families.
For the first two years at my school I had the privilege of teaching kindergarten and this past year I had the opportunity to move to second grade where I will also be teaching this year. This allows me to have students that I have already worked with and know.
Although moving to a new grade level has brought faced me with new challenges, I know these kids. I know what their interests are, what engages them, what supports they need in the classroom, and will continue to learn more as they grow and mature this upcoming second grade year.
My students are in need of chapter books from some of their favorite series books. These book will provide students with choice and will allow them to think on a deeper level about texts that they find engaging.
From Junie B Jones to Mr. Putter and Tabby, students will be able to connect with characters each time they open a book from their favorite series.
These books will be used in our classroom library for students to access during literacy stations. They will be able to pick these books during book shopping to add to their book baggies that they read during independent reading time. Additionally, they will be using these books during the Series Book Club unit where they meet with book clubs daily.
These books will help my students to not only engage in the books that they are reading and continue to grow their love for reading, but it will also help them to take part in authentic, rich conversations about the books they are reading.
