I teach in a low-income, high-mobility school that is 100% Title I. This means all of our children receive free breakfast and lunch during the school day. We receive many refugee students and have a high population of English Language Learners.
My students in second-grade are sweet and crave positive interactions and for someone to show a genuine interest in them.
They are eager to learn new things love to share what they have learned with others. These students need positive role models in their lives to introduce them to the wonders of the world around them.
My students frequently ask me if there is a second book to many of the books I read in the class. James Howe and Ruth Stiles Gannett books are two of the most frequent. This project will give my students more options for class chapter book reading and books for the listening center. Finding good fit books is sometimes a challenge in second grade. Many of my kids read below or above grade level. This project will help me provide books for my students at different levels.
Life-transforming ideas have always come to me through books” – Bell Hooks.
Books like Elmer’s Dragon and Dragons of Blueland will give my students the next two books in the series to read at their leisure. This will support some of my struggling readers with great new books. The books on CD for these as well as the second and third books in James Howe’s series, Howliday Inn and The Celery Stalks at Midnight will give my students yet another way to access great literature.
