Lesvos is a Greek island off the coast of Turkey, and has received the brunt off the 55,000 refugees who have arrived in Greece since January – with 20,000 refugees arriving on the coast in the last 6 months. It is a waiting spot before refugees go on to other locations in Europe, and the situation is apparently quite desperate due to a lack of volunteers, shelters, space, and food. Euro Relief and YWAM run a camp there, which we will be volunteering in for a little over 3 weeks in June / July. There are 6 of us in the team and we are flying out in 3 weeks!
In terms of what we will be doing, there are three 8 hour shifts per day; we will be doing one for 6 days a week. Apparently, what we will be doing can vary hugely – from manning the information desk, building shelters, cooking and cleaning, to food distribution. It’s hard for them to tell us until we get there. On arrival, we will have 2 days of training and then get stuck in!
Any donations are hugely appreciated. Some will go towards the cost of the trip and some towards the refugees directly (we’re hoping to fundraise enough so that we can make a significant donation to the work which goes on there).
