A little bit of context
Men’s Mental Health Week (12-18 June) is a time to raise awareness around the impact and prevalence of major conditions such as depression and anxiety which are affecting an increasing number of men.
But there’s a problem
Mental health issues can be extremely debilitating – with men being far less likely than their female counterparts to reach out and seek out help due to the stigma attached to masculinity and the perceived ‘weakness’ in asking for help. As a result many men keep these issues to themselves, hidden from their friends and family, who sometimes only find out when it’s too late. We aim to raise funds and awareness, break down the stigma, and show that the sporting community can play a big part in embracing and supporting those who need help.
Here’s what we’re doing about it
Some fantastic organisations support men’s mental health – Beyond Blue being one of the major players. So we thought we should get our players involved, raising funds for this fantastic charity while also raising awareness in our own community. Hence: Beard Round!
From 26 May, no shaving (or clipping) is allowed – beards must be given this time to grow to their full potential. On the weekend 24 and 25 June, team photos will be taken of each men’s fuzzy-faced squad to immortalise the moment and raise awareness by being shared on the social media platforms of all our 100+ members.
You can join us
The aim is to raise up to $4,000 for Beard Round… with one added bonus – if we raise MORE than $4,000, then we up the ante: Beard Round will instead become MO Round!
So if you’d prefer to see us sporting an embarrassing moustache instead of a studly/hipster beard, dig deep and spread the message throughout your networks.
As the great Bigge Smalls once said: “Mo’ money, mo’ MOs”!
All proceeds will be going to Beyond Blue.
