The CDF Freedom Schools program is a literacy-rich summer program developed to serve children in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is rare, cost-prohibitive or non-existent. The Freedom Schools program is proudly rooted in the American Civil Rights Movement, as well as the courageous efforts of college-aged youth to make a difference. The movement of the Freedom Schools was reborn in 1995 under the leadership of Marian Wright Edelman and the Children’s Defense Fund’s Black Community Crusade for Children®.
