The saga continues! Help us print Kamikaze Volume 2 and SoundBox, a thrilling spinoff comic.
Kamikaze is a Glyph Award winning scifi webcomic forged with equal parts passion, talent, and geekery by Havana Nguyen, and Alan and Carrie Tupper. With our powers combined we work every week to bring our vision to life one over-ambitious page at a time. With your help we created Volume 1. Now we’re ready to print Kamikaze: Volume 2 AND a short one-off comic SoundBox! Let’s make books together!
Kamikaze is a webcomic that began its life as a pitch for an animated series. With a new update every Wednesday, the comic follows the style and story of its original vision. Last year through your help we printed Volume 1, and now we’re ready to take Volume 2 to print! By supporting our Kickstarter you’re helping us print our second graphic novel and the continue the story of Kamikaze!
Kamikaze Volume 2 will be a softcover, 6 x 9in, perfect bound book. It’ll have 110 double-sided pages which include the comic, a holiday mini comic, world building notes, beautiful splash art, character dossiers, development artwork, and an introduction by Afua Richardson (Nina Simone Award winning Artist behind Marvel’s World of Wakanda, Attack on Titan, DC’s All Star Batman, Vertigo’s MadMax, Top Cow’s Genius, and more).
In addition to printing Volume 2 we’re also using funds to print our second Wall Tale! Kamikaze Wall Tales are short one off comics that follow the adventures of Kamikaze.
The good news is all the hard work is done! The art is finished, additional writing is done and all the content for the comic is being laid out for print. At this point all we just need the funds to put ink on paper! Because we’re printing both a graphic novel and a floppy together, things are a bit more pricey this time around.
All comic printing will be done by the same printing company we worked with for Volume 1. They have over 20 years of experience, so you can expect the same gorgeous books as the first time! Because this printer is local to our area we’ll be able to get your comics to you faster!
When a risky delivery blows up in Markesha Nin’s face she’s hell-bent on doing whatever it takes to keep herself and her father alive. With a vicious gang hot on her trail Markesha’s got two choices: Leave and risk death in the dangerous wastes beyond the city, or stay and take a dubius job from a treacherous benefactor. It’s a race against the clock as Markesha does everything in her power to get out of trouble. The Razors are hungry for retribution, the only safe passage to a new life is closing, and Orson Stykes isn’t letting her out of his sight.
Kamikaze Volume 2 is the second installment of an epic science fiction saga, a taut political thriller, and a high-flying action series with an intimate dramatic heart. The story continues as tension mounts and Markesha must make a crucial decision.
The comic is set in a world 200 years after a plague wipes out virtually all plant life on Earth. The whole world turned to dust, billions perished, and civilization as we know it was redefined. Survivors call it “The Withering.”
Remaining vegetation came under forceful protection of city-states, lead by corporations that evolved into feudal royalty. Survivors settled around these protected areas to escape stretches of abandoned wasteland where only the most robust forms of life could survive the erratic weather, wind storms, and dust-bowl conditions. City-states jockey for position among themselves while searching for more farmland, resources, and any weapon to destroy their competitors.
For the millions of poor, food is more precious than gold. For the few highborn, information is more precious than food.
When we started working on Kamikaze as a comic we wanted to create a comic that looked ‘animated’. Using complex backgrounds, cell shaded art, dynamic lighting and expressive character designs gives the comic a unique ‘animated’ appearance.
Each page goes through a multi-step process between three artists: Alan does rough layouts and backgrounds, Havana creates character designs and lettering, and Carrie takes the lead on writing while doing ink and color work.
Influenced by the works of Greg Weisman (Gargoyles,Young Justice), Bruce Timm (Batman the Animated Series) and film works such as Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and Mad Max, Kamikaze’s unique style was created as a love letter to some of the best in animation and sci-fi media. When fans say “It feels like I’m reading a movie!” it makes us smile because that’s exactly what we’re going for.

Unlike our first Kickstarter we’re earlier in the process of book layout. While we’re confident we can get the book laid out quickly, backer rewards will likely arrive somewhat slower than they did last time.
We’re also planning on sending out all rewards at once vs sending the book alone and then the other rewards separately. We did this last time but it put an even larger dent in the shipping costs than anticipated. This is a mistake we don’t plan on making again, as we’re committed to using the funds we’ve been given wisely.
Speaking of rewards, this is our first time doing stickers and enamel pins! The designs for these items are finished, but we’re still going to be on a learning curve for the printing/casting process.
Fortunately we’ve been able to tap into the experience and know-how of experts on all levels. Our book printer has over two decades of experience producing work for a wide range of clients, including comics. Located less than 30 minutes from the team, they have proven to be fantastic collaborators and their turnaround time for printing is ridiculously fast. Once the book layout is finished on our side and the printer gives the go ahead, we’ll have books in hand in less than 12 business days. The sticker and pin folks are established, well respected vendors who’ve been working in the business for more than 15 years. Their expertise should ensure that the product you get will be quality work.
We were very lucky to have access to several veterans on successful Kickstarters on our last project. Through them we learned about fulfillment pitfalls and strategies that helped us get rewards out in a timely, secure manner. This time we think we can do an even better job getting everything out to you at once.
All the artwork has been done. The book layout work is in process so there shouldn’t be months and months of waiting. We have a quote in writing from the printer, so there won’t be any cost surprises. Just like last time, once the book layout is finished, everything will be set to go to print!
