Tell Us How You Started:
Ever since I can remember, both sides of my family canned and pickled vegetables. My Father’s side in Iowa, and my Mother’s in Nebraska. The pickling recipe I use today started in the 1970’s from my grandmother, though I have added a few more ingredients. It all started with pickled beans. I still have not been able to perfect them like my mother or grandmother, but I do believe I have perfected the pickle!
Starting in 2014 I put my own twist on these old family recipes and started Farv’s Pickles. Bringing great Midwest canning recipes to sunny San Diego. Farv’s Pickles is a handcrafted, Artisan pickle company. We hand-pack each jar with local, all natural ingredients.
Farv’s specializes in “new pickle”…what does that mean?
“New pickles,” which is to say they have more of a fresh snap to them than the palate-wrecking, super sour fluorescent kind in big jars on deli counters. Grandma’s dill pickle recipe is perfect, missing the garlicky punch to the face that mass produced ones have. It also calls for equal parts vinegar and water — another reason why eaters enjoy fresh vegetable flavors.
Any fruit or vegetable if it’s in season. Recently, a client found Farv’s on Yelp to garnish her Bloody Mary party with pickled green beans, cherry tomatoes and spicy carrots.
