In 2009, the owners of Backbeat Records were frustrated. They had rare records to sell, and they knew they needed to sell them online to stay competitive in what was a rapidly changing retail environment. They also needed to tightly control their inventory to make sure they couldn’t sell the same item in their shop if it had been sold online. E-commerce was difficult to implement at the time and point-of-sale (POS) was far too expensive for them and most other independent retailers.
The lack of available solutions and a near-zero budget forced them to innovate instead. In 2010 they launched AirPOS to help them, and other retailers, compete in an increasingly online world.
Today, AirPOS is a scalable, secure and mature software-as-a-service platform which enables 100’s of independent retailers in over a dozen countries to manage their business and serve their customers more easily whether that’s in their shops, online or on the move whether on a UK train network with First Onboard, in remote Scout Shop adventure centres in the rural UK or even in German pop-up stores with household names like Fossil.
The independent retail market in Europe numbers over 17 million businesses (Eurostat) but less than 12% currently sell online (NSOMS / Cambridge Econometrics). We aim to change that. Technology has created smarter shoppers, AirPOS mission is to create smarter shopkeepers.
