The Problem
38 million Tanzanians (76% of the population) currently live without electricity. Without power, children’s ability to study at home is limited, and households resort to using toxic kerosene lamps that are harmful to family health. To date, solar companies operating in Tanzania have served only 0.5% of those living without reliable energy access. Low income households are unable to invest in off grid solutions due to expensive nature of products and lack of access to finance.
Sikubora Limited brings together solar and mobile technology to provide affordable, clean and bright energy to off-grid population in Tanzania. Sikubora provides smart credit to enable low income consumers to access energy products and pay for them in installments using mobile money. In addition to serving households, Sikubora also develops and installs custom solutions for clinics, schools and businesses in Tanzania, thus helping spur economic growth and industrialization in the country.
Impact
To date, Sikubora has installed over 200 solar systems. 1,000 off-grid homeowners and family members now have access to electricity, with Sikubora systems providing a total of more than 100,000 watt-hours of electricity per day.
