‘Squeeze Harder, Zanni!’ is a new play written, performed and directed by two ex-students of Stockton Sixth Form College. The play is an absurd comedy filled with slapstick humour and tongue in cheek innuendo, and has been performed three times up to now for our local area, and all three times received fantastic reviews. It’s the story of a man, The Doctor, and his servant, Zanni. Zanni is a foolish man who can’t speak English and thinks primarily of food and sex, and The Doctor takes pity on Zanni, electing to teach Zanni how to be a gentleman in order to woo a woman. The play involves several sketch-show type scenes, all of which are guaranteed to make people laugh!
We are taking this play to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August, where we will be doing a full month run, in the hope that we can meet people directly involved in the world of theatre and see where we can take it in the future. The performance started out as a two minute sketch in our second year of BTEC Drama together, and we enjoyed it so much that we decided to turn it into a full-length play. When this turned out to be a success, we were pointed in the direction of the Fringe and have been looking into it ever since.
All of the money we raised from our three shows is going towards taking the play to Edinburgh, but the amount we have raised so far is way off the amount we would need to hire the venue, publicise and pay for accommodation for the month. £5000 added to what we expect to be able to raise ourselves would cover our costs and mean we have a chance of making our dream of having written a successful play together a reality! Any donations at all would be a huge help to us, and we appreciate them all.
