The Wizard and The Slug is a story-rich 2D action platformer with plenty of humor. You play as a Slug who joins forces with a mysterious Wizard. The Wizard will independently support you in various ways, mainly by casting spells during boss battles. Each level also gives you the opportunity to team up with a different companion who will help you out. Roam a fantasy world, make friends and battle thy enemies!
Features
-Action platforming as a Slug
-A.I companions
-Not your typical fairy tale story
-Story mode and Arcade mode (which cuts out the story and gets you into the action)
-Charming art style and characters
-Original soundtrack blending 8-16 bit with jazz and orchestral flair.
The Team
Silkworm (Robin Velu) – Um.. that’s everybody, I guess?
I’m just a regular dude from Sweden interested in creative things. I started as a musician, then tried animation and now I’m making a weird game. It’s pretty cool, you should check it out!
“At the dawn of time the Gods created the Immortals, undying races which once created could never be destroyed. Mortals too were created. Beings tied to the circle of life, they aged, died and were reborn. Some time ago a curse was wrought upon the mortals and conflict arose among them them. Not wanting to get involved, the immortals took to the skies and depths of the world leaving the mortals to their fate.”
Our story starts many years later as an immortal runaway wizard, seemingly hunted by the Gods themselves, falls from the sky. While lying wounded and wallowing in self-pity, the wizard finds an unusual ally in a lonely slug and together they set out on a rescue mission.
Also, what is a story without some love thrown in there?
As a slug, you are of course blessed with some useful abilities! You attack by flinging parts of yourself at your enemies and then regrowing with the regrow button. You can shot in 4 directions and also arch your shots by moving in a certain direction. While airborne, shooting down propels you upwards in a double and triple jump.
Beware though, as shooting will shrink your body leaving you vulnerable to attack. Getting hit while you’re the smallest size makes you take damage. Mastering the controls involves some fast and precise button presses. By the end though, my goal is to make you feel like the Slug God you always aspired to be!
Boss battles also brings the Wizard into the mix supporting you with both offensive and defensive spells.
All music from the demo can be listened to here!
The game features a large soundtrack which blends 8-16 bit with jazz and orchestral flair.
For the gameplay the inspirations come mostly from old school style platformers with an action focus (Mega man, Cave story etc.).
As for the writing. It has been said “Everyone is the hero of their own story”. I’m not a huge fan of black and white story-telling. I like nuance and characters with flaws. I prefer the clashing of ideals rather than those of good vs evil. I like a lot of Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films for this reason. Other influences ranges from fairy tales to Abrahamic and Greek mythology mixed with casual quirky writing of things like old adventure games, Adventure time and Undertale with a very character driven focus.
I’ve been developing this game between jobs for the past 2 years. I feel like I’m in the groove and really want to finish it now without having to take another break not knowing how long it’ll be until I can get back to it.
-After taxes and fees, the kickstarter money will go towards supporting me while I finishing up the second act as well as the development of the third and final act of the game.
-Any amount that’s left will go towards polishing the game. I feel there are some things that are a bit rough and that I would like to spend some more time on, both in audio/visuals and design.
I have a few ideas. If it looks like the game will be funded I’ll start announcing them. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
With your help, I’m aiming to be done with the game by the end of the year and with a release shortly after. I love working on this game and really want to share this world that has been brewing in my head. If you like this project please spread the word! Let’s make it happen!
At this point the game is more than halfway done. I know where the game is going and what is left to make. I’m quite confident the game will be completed and can’t see myself ever abandoning this project. Without funding though, it’ll definitely be delayed while I look for work and a means to fund the game myself. Even with funding there is of course always risks of delays for unforeseen reasons. So far there hasn’t been any major hiccups in the development so I hope I can just keep working at the same pace.
For the Mac release: I’m not sure how much extra testing will be involved so it might take a bit longer to come out.
