Dreamscape is a student produced project being shot on 16mm film that looks into and explores the connection between the near perfect perception of individuals on social media and in turn the effect this can have on real world relationships. It asks the question, is perfection always perfect?
Lily, a 19-year old university student, struggles with the idea that the relationship she has with her long-term boyfriend, Jake, does not measure up to the standards set by couples that she sees daily on social media. After a fight that leaves Lilly disheartened and dissatisfied, she begins a journey that involves delving into her subconscious, where she encounters the couples she so idolizes from her social media feed.
The film deals with issues such as cheating and abuse, both physical and mental, and explores the theme of perspective and perfection. Dreamscape also aims to address the prevalent notion in today’s society regarding the ‘highlight reel’ we see of others lives through the photos and videos chosen to be shared.
As we all know all too well, being a university student means the bank account is fairly bare a lot of the time. The team behind Dreamscape, however, believe that to do this story justice, we need to be able to invest in the proper equipment and resources.
Things that need to be purchased include:
-Film Stock: $400
-Processing film: $400
-Scanning onto a digital format: $200
-Equipment hire: $350 – EasyRig hire
-Miscellaneous (e.g. costumes, makeup, props, etc.): $250
This being said, our whole team is incredibly grateful to be working on this project, and appreciate any amount that you are able to donate to help this film become a reality.
The main challenge that has arisen from this project is simply the process of using 16mm film and the expenses that are synonymous with this medium.
Using film however is also an incredible opportunity that is not to be overlooked. The beauty and feel of film adds another dimension to whatever is shot and the extra cost that comes along with this we feel is well worth it.
