What would the next generation want you to invest in today?
Canoe Reach Energy Inc. has the answer in clean energy, local food and economic diversification. All without exposure to a carbon tax or commodity price fluctuations.
Canoe Reach Energy is about realizing a vision. One where sustainable zero impact geothermal energy is the cornerstone of a new way of being, while also earning economic returns.
Canoe Reach Energy Inc. will primarily earn revenue from the sale of geothermal heat to local commercial operations. Secondary lines of business will deliver revenue from possible direct investment in hot pools and organic greenhouses, revenue sharing with the hot pools operation, ecotourism, and sales of carbon credits.
Canoe Reach Energy can access heat from geothermal wells drilled by our parent company, Borealis GeoPower ,and facilitate a local community’s dream to have world-class hot pools, with views stretching across Kinbasket Lake and under the two opposing mountain ranges that just beckon for visitors. A fossil fuel-free meal, sourced from locally grown food, can be on the table next year from Grown Here’s organic greenhouse.
The GeoHeat Park’s use of the geothermal resource represents an opportunity to become British Columbia’s, and indeed Canada’s, “greenest” provider of thermal energy. Canoe Reach Energy proposes to use 100% renewable, emissions-free, local geothermal energy to cost effectively substitute for traditional fossil fuelled based commercial heating sources.
Investors in Canoe Reach Energy will receive preferred shares that are expected to deliver an ~11% Internal Rate of Return, over 5 years. This includes an immediate 30% investor tax credit that can be claimed on BC provincial 2016 tax returns. Canoe Reach Energy will hold the option to redeem the shares after 5 years. Phase 1 investors will be provided with an option to invest in Phase 2 – a 15x larger GeoHeat Park that will enjoy an economy of scale not available in Phase 1. Phase 2 investors will be invited to participate in Phase 3 – which is expected to be a 15 MW or larger power plant with an Electricity Purchase Agreement from BC Hydro.
Phase 1: Canoe Reach Energy Inc.’s project will primarily earn revenue from the sale of geothermal heat to local commercial operations. Secondary lines of business will deliver revenue from possible direct investment in hot pools and organic greenhouses, revenue sharing with the hot pools operation, ecotourism, and sales of carbon credits. Equipment trials on our geothermal reservoir are also expected to add to our revenue given that we’ll be the only operating high temperature geothermal system in the country.
All primary and secondary lines of business will need to meet minimum hurdle rates and will be risk managed to protect Canoe Reach Energy investors. All sales contracts will be long term in nature. We expect that heat sales will be set to below fossil fuel prices in order to encourage fuel switching.
Phase 2 includes micro power sold in a Standing Offer Program (SOP) and 15x more heat than Phase 1.
Phase 3 includes 15 MW power sold in a SOP and 3x more heat than Phase 2.

Having held several positions at a coal-based utility in the US and hydrocarbon giants in Canada, such as Suncor and Nexen, and now as a Principal at Borealis GeoPower and Canoe Reach Energy, Alison Thompson has stood on both sides of what sometimes seems like a deep divide between renewable and non-renewable energy production. As an engineer, she brings a depth of understanding of the technology behind energy production. Through her incredible diversity of experience, she has developed an intimate understanding of the political landscape and business culture of energy in Canada and beyond.
Ms. Thompson was also the Vice President, Corporate Relations, at Magma Energy (now Alterra Power), the geothermal Project Development Manager at Nexen, and Manager of Technology Strategy and Development at Suncor Energy where one of her roles was managing a geothermal energy consortium project with other major oil compani
