Aether is a Newcastle upon Tyne-based (UK) three-piece spanning cello, piano, vocals and violin. Merging influences from contemporary classical, Eastern European folk, celtic, medieval, art-song and music for visual performance, Aether offers a truly unique, ethereal, atmospheric original sound that “won’t be appearing on any plodding indie rock bills any time soon” (The Crack).
The band was officially formed in May 2016 following a commission from the Amy Johnson Festival to stage an evening of music in Holy Trinity Church, Hull to celebrate the famous aviatrix’s life – “Their ethereal and expressive songs and instrumentals ingeniously dramatised their stories…” (Rich & Lou’s Loudhailer).
Following the concert the band has written a full theatre score for Circus Central’s ‘The Vampire Rabbit’, improvised a soundtrack for an experimental moving image project as part of Channel 4’s ‘Random Acts’, and performed as street artists in Dunfermline Children’s Gala as Jungle Book-themed medieval bards and the NewcastleGateshead Inititative’s Winter Carnival with Walk the Plank as Krampus demons.
After a headlining gig as part of the Alphabetti Theatre ‘Bye Bye Basement’ season, they are now working towards recording their first studio album with a planned release for 2017, as well as a commission from Moving Parts: Newcastle Puppetry Festival 2017 to devise a piece with esteemed puppeteer Lori Hopkins.
