A co-op adventure game for 2 players. Move your toys, Mina & Tim, on your tablet to explore the fabulous world of Oniri Islands!
Oniri Islands is an adventure and exploration game, with something quite unique: the characters are two smart toys coming to life on your tablet.
Once the toys are placed on the screen, the adventure begins. You move them to explore a gorgeous world full of wonders and mysteries.
We created a collaborative game for two people to share and enjoy together. We call it a hybrid game because it combines the warmth and tactile touch of a board game with the storytelling power of a video game.
Oniri is made for adventure game lovers from 6 years old and up!
We’ve been testing Oniri for two years, from the very first prototype to the current game chapters, here is what people loved about it:
playing with real toys
Oniri Islands is brought to you by Tourmaline Studio, a team of passionate people crafting new kinds of games by blending physical and digital realms.
Monkey Island: A classic that never grew old! Monkey Island inspired us for the creation of our narrator: the biting humor and the goofy situations and characters.
Botanicula: We love the game for its unique art style and sound design, for the profusion of adorable hybrid creatures and for its non-verbal storytelling.
Sword & Sworcery: Sword & Sworcery revisits classic adventure game in a very modern way in terms of art style, narration and interaction design: it was a huge inspiration for us. We love it for the wild natural landscapes, its sense of wonder and mystery, and for its incredibly beautiful score.
Oniri Islands brings a new way to tell and play a story: the game reacts in real time to the presence of the toys put on the screen. Unlike most Toys-to-life console-based games where you unlock contents by placing the toy on a portal, we dive into something different: you actually play with the toys, as they are the game controllers.
Our philosophy is more about combining boardgame mechanics with video game possibilities for real-time interaction and storytelling. The video game is enhanced by new interactions offered by the toys and vice-versa, plus they extend the game universe outside the screen, making it tangible.

Languages
The game will be in English and French (text and voice over). We might add a stretch goal for additional languages.
The two toys are recognized through tactile tags (pattern) so the game can’t be played with any other toys. There is no battery, NFC or RFID inside, it cleverly uses the static electricity from your body. This technology was created and patented by the french design studio Volumique.
Our universe is written by David Calvo, former narrative designer at Ankama and writer of novels and short stories.
Oniri Islands is a co-op adventure game where players explore a magical island with the help of their grandma and animal masks. Help Mina and Tim find their lost shadows and their way back home.
— Cooperation – Play with your partner (kid, parent, friend, adventure buddy, etc.), move and think together. Coordinating your powers and making sure you’re looking after each other is the key to survive in this world. No puzzle will resist you if you put your heads together!
— Explore with your toys – Move your toys on your tablet screen to explore the wonderful landscapes of the island and discover its mysteries.
— Masks & Powers – Find new animal masks. With their magical power you can face every situation! Fly with the Falcon, dive underwater with the Shark and see through everything with the Caracal.
— Quests – Answer the requests of the island folks: lost children, fantastic creatures, even talking plants. Help them by rescuing their siblings, finding lost temples or escorting them for the tea. You will earn their ever-living gratitude but also new masks with new powers!

Oniri Islands universe is both poetic and strange. Our heroes explore a mysterious island, where fauna & flora seems to come from another world.
We want Oniri Islands to look & feel like a children’s book: colorful, generous, yet simple. We created a naive yet expressive colorful visual style. The camera view influenced also how the game was made: to create an immersive universe from a top-down view, we made the game in 3D with a low-poly cell shading look. 2D illustrations are also part of the game as narrative little cut-scenes. The UI is discrete and very simple as we want players to focus on narration and exploration.
We took our inspirations from game and animation studios such as Ghibli, Cartoon Saloon, La Cachette, Atelier Sento but also games with unique aesthetic like Zelda Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, Monument Valley, Gnog, Ooblet or Lieve Oma.
All the music and sound are original creations of Léa and Baptiste. They created a very distinctive audio style around key elements: the island, children tribes and totem animals.
Music is composed with a mix of islander wooden instruments, synths, animals and children voices, as well as natural elements like dripping water or wind. This music composition creates rich, profound textures that conveys well the poetry and wonder within the scenario.
Oniri Islands is a game out of the box. We are very few people to create games with physical objects, toys-to-life games are mainly produced by big companies. Back us today to support an independent studio focused on bringing you a game of quality and uniqueness.
To manufacture toys for mass production, we need to produce a minimum of 1500 game boxes to make the first batch. Everything is ready to start the toys production, we are working with Panda Games Manufacturing, a canadian manufacturer with factories in China. They are well-known for the quality of their work (Scythe, Merchants & Marauders, Trickerion).
We are so excited to have your feedback and discuss the game with you. As a backer, you will be one of the first player to possess the game, you will influence the future of the Oniriverse. Be part of the adventure with us!

Marion and Camille began the project together, the game was first called Onirigami. They made the first gameplay prototype with Jonathan Connell (programming), Léa (sound design) and Baptiste (music). Meanwhile they prototyped the toys with Manon (product designer) and 3D printed the very first samples.
Onirigami was awarded with several swiss grants, thanks to them we created Tourmaline Studio and started planning the game production.
David Calvo (Narrative Designer) joined the team and created the foundation of the Oniriverse. Violaine Briat, (illustrator) created right after the first characters and island’s design. Later she drew the toys concept arts.
The team grew with Mathieu (Programmer), Delphine (2D,3D artist) and Mathilde (Illustrator). The production started in january 2016. After lots of discussion we decided to change the name of the game to Oniri Islands: easier to pronounce and remember.
We spent our last year developing two chapters and exhibiting our demo in festivals (Gamescom, Paris Games Week, Nasscom, Indie Cade EU, GDC US, etc.) to get feedback and improve the game experience.
Today we are with you on Kickstarter to make Oniri a reality!
They are some risks with the development of hybrid games, the main challenges are manufacturing and distribution.
We already made our R&D with Panda, they created for us samples so we are 100% sure we can mass produce the toys. We will start the production early to be sure you will receive the game on time and enjoy your adventure on Oniri Islands.
Volumique technology works on iOS and Android devices. We develop Oniri with Unity game engine and we test all our builds on iOS and Android.
Also we are in relation with Apple and Google to make sure Oniri can be released on these stores.
