American actor Benicio del Toro and Cuban singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés, among other figures of the cinema and the arts, will headline the sessions of the International Film Festival of Gibara, Cuba—previously known as the Festival del Cine Pobre (Independent Film Festival) in its 14 previous editions. The event will be held from April 15 to 21 in the picturesque “Villa Blanca” located on the northern coast of the province of Holguin.
The call for the participating works is open until March 15. Filmmakers from all over the world will be able to compete for the Lucia award in the categories of fiction feature film, short fiction, documentary feature film, documentary short film and “cinema under construction, ” a category that includes from unpublished scripts to works in the post-production stages. Lucia awards will also be given to the best director, best masculine performance and best feminine performance.
“The International Film Festival of Gibara will seek from this moment on to establish a broader and plural dialogue between all possible film areas of the world. It will remain an alternative, but as a platform where, in truth, “all the voices” of the audiovisual field can converge, without neglecting the ever discriminatory labels of “independent cinema” and “industry”, “margin” and “center “Third “and” First world, “actor and director Jorge Perugorria, president of the Festival, said in a press release.
Inspired by the project promoted by the late Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás, the contest aims to open up a broader spectrum of communication between the arts. The Festival has Gibara as the main venue for its significant role in the history of Cuban cinema and for the love that its population has developed for the seventh art and all arts in general.
Call for entries
The Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry (ICAIC), the Government of Holguin, and the Government of Gibara, call for entries to the International Film Festival of Gibara.
Requirements
Materials in original language will be accepted with subtitles in Spanish and made after the year 2015 to the present.
You can compete in the following categories:
– Feature film, Fiction
– Short Fiction
– Feature film, Documentary
– Short documentary
-“Cinema under construction,” from unpublished scripts to works in the post-production stages.
Ten films will be selected in each category by a Selection Committee named by the Board of Directors.
Jury
The jury in each category will be integrated by prestigious figures of the audiovisual field and the arts of Cuba and the world.
The decisions of the jury are final.
Each winning work will receive the Lucia Award, consisting of a sculptural piece allegory to the classic piece of Cuban Cinema of the same name. Lucía Awards will also be granted to other specialties that jurors decide.
Prize
A cash prize will be awarded on the name of Humberto Solás to those works under construction that most honor the concept of Independent Cinema promoted by Solás.
