THE SITUATION IN MALAWI
Malawi has a current population of 17 million people. It gained independence from Britain in 1964 and remains a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
Malawi Medical College graduates 20-50 doctors per year but the Government can only pay them around US$1000 per year.
Many graduates thus seek employment with some of the more affluent countries within the African continent.
DR JACK ETETE
Dr Jack Etete completed his Medical training in the Democratic Republic of Congo and then spent 6 months in Zambia gaining surgical experience. He moved to Malawi in 2010 seeking more security for his family.
Dr Jack Etete works at Partners In Hope Hospital in the capital Lilongwe.
Partners in Hope was built and funded by an American charity with support from USAID.
Dr Etete’s monthly salary is US$2,700.
THE NEW ZOE MEDICAL CENTRE
Dr Etete has now built a free standing Medical Clinic with support from
North West Mission.
The Clinic charges a reduced fee for needy Malawians who don’t have ready access to Health Services.
Th Clinic is staffed by one Clinical Officer, one Nurse, one Administrative Officer, one Cleaner and one Guard.
Dr Etete works at Zoe Medical Centre every evening up to 8pm.
This follows his normal working day at Partners in Hope Hospital.
He has also set up an Outreach Clinic at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp which he attends each Saturday.
Dzaleka is a community of 28,000 people who have fled conflict zones in central and northern Africa.
PLANS TO EXPAND
Dr Jack Etete plans to work full time at Zoe Medical Centre. He also wishes to create more Outreach Clinics to provide access for the local population.
To do this he will need to relinquish his paid position at Partners in Hope Hospital. He knows that the Clinic will then be able to move towards self sustainability.
“I really want to develop Zoe and also all the Staff with your support”
“Zoe Medical Centre was born to bring assistance to the needy Malawians who cannot afford high quality health services”
“My aim is to reach out to those who cannot afford to come to hospital – assist them and give them better care”
HOW CAN WE HELP ?
The aim is to support Dr Etete for 12 months at his current salary of US$2,700 per month.
This converts to AUD$3,500 per month.
So we need to raise AUD$42,000 to fund Dr Etete for one year while he builds the Clinic into self sustainability.
