Shiliya Market Women’s Group’s story
Caroline, who is holding a tomato in her hand in the picture, is 46 years old. She is single, divorced and has 3 children, of whom two are still going to school.
Caroline sells onions and tomatoes in a large market near the road side. She enjoys her business very much because she is able to buy what she needs to live and pay for her children’s schooling. She dreams of a bright future for her children. She has been selling onions and tomatoes for 10 years and her main challenge is that during the hot season the business slows down and the tomatoes go to waste.
Caroline will use this loan to buy a gas cooking stove and pellets to cut down the hardship of looking for firewood. There are no more trees around as they have all been cut down, so buying the stove and pellets will provide a good solution.

About Emerging Cooking Solutions Zambia:
Emerging Cooking Solutions (ECS) is a private company that sells clean cooking stoves and sustainable fuel pellets. ECS aims to replace the use of charcoal for cooking with renewable fuel pellets that save forests, reduce CO2-emissions, improve people’s health and generate new tax revenue.
Kiva’s partnership with ECS helps them bring affordable clean stoves and sustainable energy solutions to urban families who use expensive and smoky charcoal stoves. Kiva funding will not only benefit urban communities making the switch to clean energy, but will also benefit the entrepreneurs who earn a secure, long term income by distributing the clean stoves and fuel pellets.
