A photography book documenting the impact of the ISAF mission on the Afghan people of Mazar-e Sharif.
In 2010 I started photographing German soldiers who were risking their lives in Afghanistan, as well as their families at home. The project culminated in 2014 as a large-scale exhibition at the Museum of Sepulchral Culture in Kassel, Germany. The book “Afghanistan” was released at the same time, and was nominated for the 2015 German photobook award.
Inspired by the experience, I immediately began preparing a return to Afghanistan to photograph the Afghans living in the vicinity of Camp Marmal, where the German forces are stationed: I wanted to directly examine how their lives had been affected by the ISAF presence. My team and I spent two weeks exploring the region, erecting our pop-up photo studio at road sides, deserts, fields and courtyards to photograph the local population. It was an unforgettable experience that will stay with me always.
At the Leica gallery during the Photokina 16 photo expo, I will have the opportunity to show many of these portraits as life-sized master prints to a large and diverse audience, in a high-profile setting. As exciting as this is, the exhibition will only be on display for a very short time. As with the first stage of this project, I feel it is important to create something more lasting.
The book will present a bigger picture of the lives we encountered — with 11 chapters of background information and interviews with some of the subjects to deepen the story even further, and showing many more images than any exhibition could.
Photographing these remarkable individuals, learning about their lives, and helping others to connect with their stories has been the most rewarding and profound experience of my life. I am now looking for your help in turning this project into a lasting archive that can still be shared after the exhibition ends.
Thank you.
Vielen Dank.
Once the project is funded the final stage of book production can begin. After finishing the copy writing and layout for the entire book and having had the printing company build a mock-up from the chosen papers and cloth the layout will be finalized and sent off to the printers.
The art direction team will be on site for the print run in order to secure the highest quality result.
