SOCKTOBER 2016- FUNDRAISER TO HELP CHICAGO’S HOMELESS
The fall is quickly approaching and with it, dropping temperatures. While this may be a delighted and welcome change after a hot Chicago summer, it presents numerous difficulties for those left without a roof over their heads. In 2015, roughly 130,000 people in Chicago identified as homeless. Of that number, 19,000 were Chicago Public Schools students alone. While this number is staggering, there are many small things we can do in order to make it more manageable for our homeless neighbors. Last year, we were able to make the smallest of differences by donating over 800 pairs of socks to the Lincoln Park Community Center. This year we are taking the SOCKTOBER Challenge once again! Socktober’s mission merely is to provide socks to our homeless neighbors. It’s a very simple idea with a powerful effect. While socks may seem trivial, they play a vital role in protecting against the cold, wet, and disease. This year we have a huge goal of donating 1,500 pairs of gently used or new socks to Lincoln Park Community Shelter. You are welcome to donate a monetary donation if that suites your needs. Otherwise, you can arrange a time for me to come pick up the socks you wish to donate. Please spread the word and invite your friends and family to the challenge. Start a small drive in your office! Together, we can meet our goal and make this Socktober a success. Hopefully, we will make the brutal Chicago winter a little more bearable. Thank you for your support. Love, Shannon H.
