Sightline Maps is a web-based platform that enables users to create a custom 3D model of any area in the world.
We believe a two-dimensional images can only explain so much about the world. As we shared Sightline during its early development, nothing compared to seeing students and teachers interact with 3D models. We knew we had to find a way to get Sightline Maps into classrooms and that’s where you come in!

Starting this month we will begin releasing lesson plans for the following topics to show teachers what they can do with Sightline Maps.

We designed Sightline Maps to be simple and intuitive for users of all ages. Here are four easy steps for navigating the site, selecting an area, generating a model, and downloading a file.
- Navigate: Enter or locate an area on the map you would like to convert to a 3D file.
- Select: Select the area using the rectangular selection tool.
- Generate: Click “Generate File” in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Download: Download the file and load it to ANY 3D PRINTER.
That’s it! You’ve now have a 3D printable file right at fingertips!
For every $100 our campaign raises, one school will receive a year long subscription to Sightline Maps. This includes:
- Immediate access to existing and future features
- Unlimited file downloads for every student and teacher
- Lesson plans designed to support integration of Sightline Maps into existing curriculums
- Direct influence on new feature development
As we continue to evolve the site, schools, individuals and companies that have existing subscriptions will immediately be granted access to new features.
With the $40,000 raised from this campaign, we will be able to support Sightline Maps in FOUR-HUNDRED schools around the world. These funds will also go towards making the site better and faster, by adding features such as the ability to create files fully optimized for color printing.
Sightline Maps is headquartered in Irvine, California. The company was founded with the drive to leverage emerging 3D printing technology to improve the way people see and learn about the world.

Risks and challenges
Adding full-color and data-layer functionality is a challenging task. This will require integration with a number of third-party APIs and a significant change to the user interface. There is no guarantee that these third-party APIs will have data that is easy to layer on top of our existing data and each may require alteration before it can be used.
Having worked with these challenges to create our current platform, we know that there will be some hurdles we cannot entirely anticipate. However, our team of developers has the experience of bringing multiple premium sculpting products to market, from formulation to package design, and for this project we have calculated margins of both cost and time to account as best as possible for the unknown.
We are very excited for this undertaking. This product solves such a pervasive and vexing problem so neatly, it seems obvious to us that it hasn’t already been done for one reason only; it’s very challenging. Conceptually, however, it’s relatively easy, so the devil really is in the details. Which suits us fine; we are a team that consistently gets the details right.
