S-tone, the sports glasses to enable listening to music through bone conduction
About this project
Today most devices for sports use earphones which can be painful, unsteady and unsecure especially when cycling.
S-tone addresses these issues thanks to the implementation of bone conduction that doesn’t require physically wearing earphones. It gives athletes back their welfare, freedom of movement and safety. All while still being able to jam out to their favorite workout tunes.
Therefore, our goal is to provide bone conduction technology for listening to music while being physically active, regardless of the sport, an athlete’s likings or their habits.
Ensuring high quality of sound
There are different ways to optimize the quality of sound in bone conduction. First with the property of materials between the transducer and the head. This optimizes the field of frequencies and increases the decibels. A soft material gives a large resonance spectrum. And secondly, the contact surface between the transducer and the head. This influenced us to launch an electronic band with four transducers and amplifiers to improve its intensity.
A complete safety
For cycling, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. So thanks to the bone conduction technology, it provides a completely safe experience for cyclists to easily adjust the volume or switch tracks without fumbling over appropriate places or buttons.
Flexible and adjustable size
The principle of the bone conduction is to keep the transducers against the head. We opted for a flexible and comfortable texture for the electronic band in order to make it extremely suitable for anyone’s head.
Typically music devices used for swimming integrate an MP3 player because of the lack of range and connection provided through Bluetooth (33ft) under water. On the other hand, Bluetooth is favored for outdoor sports. It was then obvious to integrate both MP3 player and Bluetooth technology in the S-tone electronic band.
Comfortable glasses with an easy fastening system
S-tone removes all the constraints of wearing earphones thanks to the bone conduction. The addition of foam material in front of the eyebrows and against the nose also contributes to the optimal comfort level for cycling.
The sunglass lens even integrates total UV protection with added benefit of an anti-fog treatment.

Osteophony or bone conduction is a way of transmission of sound. In the aerial conduction, the sound waves pass through the outer and middle ear (amplification of the sound) to the inner ear that transmits the information to the brain. In bone conduction, the sound doesn’t pass through the air. Instead the sound wave is created by a transducer (a vibrator) and goes to the inner ear, passing through bones and soft tissues while still transmitting the information to the brain.
Our team is co-founded by Thomas and Nelly who bring their expertise in both bone conduction and project leading fields. Both Thomas and Nelly play a pivotal role in the early stages of S-tone offering insight and vision with a medical and engineering background respectively. S-tone also comprises of members from the electronic office Anthemis Technologie (www.anthemis-technolgies.com) and the product design office Waterproof (www.waterproof-design.fr).

Risks and challenges
S-tone is an innovative concept, but the various technologies it incorporates are known and controlled. Nevertheless, bringing a prototype to the production does not happen easily. Thereby, we listed, analyzed and identified all the risks and back-up solutions before planned production. But, some delay risks will persist at different stages:
Pre-product: Indeed, to improve the final product, we may have to add or modify some elements of the electronic headband or the glasses. Although at this stage of adjustment and testing of the prototype have been taken into account, this could therefore lead some delays (new mold ordering, modification and validation of manufacturing process, equipment settings…)
Pre-serie: Also, even if we have supplier back-ups for all the electronic components, it could happen that they miss the delivery date or that the quality control is not satisfactory. This may also force us to shift our production schedule.
We choose to produce in France and are working with manufacturers who have years of experience delivering excellent products. In addition to the knowledge and expertise of our manufacturers, the proximity greatly minimizes the delay associated with the exchange of information and decision making. Despite all the difficulties we will have to overcome during this period, our motivation remains and will remain at the maximum level and we will work hard to satisfy you in terms of both quality of product and delivery date.
