Juan Andrés Ospina Big Band

26 musicians from 10 different countries, 1 big project!

About this project

ENGLISH

About myself

Hello everyone! My name is Juan Andrés Ospina, I am a Colombian musician and I have spent the past 10 years traveling around the world working as a pianist, producer, composer, arranger, and comedian. I have been part of many incredible projects that are very dear to me, and I have had the opportunity of working as producer, arranger and pianist in beautiful albums such as Portuguese singer Sofia Ribeiro’s “Ar” (2012) and “Mar Sonoro” (2016), Colombian singer Marta Gómez “Este Instante” (2015)- nominated for two Latin Grammys, Portuguese singer’s Luisa Sobral “The Cherry on my Cake” (2010)- Platinum Disc Awarded, and my first Cd as a leader “BBB: Barcelona, Bogotá, Boston” (2009). Among many other collaborators I play the piano with the multi-cultural New York based band “Banda Magda” led by my good friend Magda Giannikou and the group of Swiss singer Sylvie Bourban, and have shared stage with many great Colombian musicians such as Lucia Pulido, Antonio Arnedo and Totó la Momposinaamong many others. Some of my music has been performed by the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet(who will be one of the special guests in this Big Band Album), as well as by the Bogotá Big Band (Colombia) and the UMO Jazz Orchestra (Finland), and along with my brother Nicolás we created the music/humor duet “Inténtalo Carito”, with which we composed the famous song “Qué difícil es hablar el español” and have traveled to many countries with our live show.

The Big Band

Working with all these super talented musicians and close friends has been a deeply fulfilling experience for me, and nevertheless there is one personal project that has been chasing me for the past 10 years: an album with my music for big band. Despite having spent endless hours writing this music (first while studying at Berklee, then through commissions from the Colombian jazz festival “Jazz al parque”), there is not even one good recording of any of these pieces, and at this point it is almost a need for me to put it out. Not only to be fair with all the work and energy I have put into it, but also because I love this music and want to share it with the world.

For more than a year I have been editing the pieces and rewriting sections, as well as putting together a band with some incredibly talented musicians from all over the world living in New York. We have had four rehearsals, and the music is getting better and better every time.

The great Paquito D’Rivera will be one of the special guests in this album!

COSTS

Making an album with so many people is very expensive, and every single dollar I get will go to pay the following costs.

Paying the musicians: This is the main expense in this album, as these are all really incredible musicians who have spent their life working to have the skills necessary to play music of this level. I can’t stress enough how much I admire these guys, and how fortunate I am of having all of them in this project.

Studio fees: We will record in an incredible studio in New York, on the 7, 8 and 9 of January 2017.

Video fees: For this project I want to work with the incredibly talented Andy LaViolette (who has directed all the videos of Snarky Puppy, as well as the videos from the album “Mar sonoro” of Sofia Ribeiro). The more money I get, the more complete the video will be.

Mixing and mastering fees: I will work with my great friend and super engineer Jeremy Loucas, with whom I worked together in my album “BBB: Barcelona Bogotá Boston” (2009), “Ar” (Sofia Ribeiro, 2012), “Este instante” (Marta Gómez, 2014), and “Mar sonoro” (Sofia Ribeiro, 2016).

Album’s art fees: My super talented sister Silvia Ospina will be in charge of the art of the album. Silvia also did the art for most of the albums I have produced, such as “BBB: Barcelona Bogotá Boston” (2009), Sofia Ribeiro’s “Ar” (2012) and “Mar sonoro”(2016) and Luisa Sobral “The Cherry on my Cake” (2010), as well as my brother Nicolás Ospina’s latest album “Girando para atrás” (2015).

The musicians in the project come from 10 different countries. Here is Magda Giannikou (Greece), who will play the accordion and help co-producing the recording session

Gracias por su tiempo!

Risks and challenges

Everything related to this project has been a challenge! For years I postponed it, overwhelmed with the idea of putting it together. Finding all the musicians, organizing rehearsals, editing existing pieces and writing new ones, creating a video for the campaign, synchronizing 26 different agendas: every single aspect of this project is a challenge. But the music is worth it!
