Eli’s Beauty Salon
Hi my name is Elizabeth Marinero. I came to Oakland when I was 14 years old. I grew up in Bayamon, Puerto Rico before I emigrated to the United States. My father moved the family often while I was growing up. We went to New York and Dallas and many other cities before settling in Oakland.
My first job in the U.S. was as a copyist at Merill Lynch when I was 19. I worked at Merill Lynch for seven years and then I decided to go to Alameda beauty school to learn the profession. My mom was a hair stylist and she had a beauty salon in Oakland which she started in 1980 and I grew up in her shop.

More about this loan
I worked with my mother Dolores for almost 20 years. I started out making minimum wage, $4.25 an hour as a hair stylist. I built up my talents learning from my mother and from other stylists that worked at Mom’s shop.
I saved up enough money to start my own business and began Eli’s Beauty Salon on International Blvd. in the Fruitvale district of Oakland in 2009. I have a cozy shop with eight barber chairs and I have two ladies who rent them from me and two assistants. We offer perms, colors and braids besides traditional hair styling.
What is the purpose of this loan?
This loan will improve the appearance of my shop and provide me with additional capital to make improvements resulting in greater walk-in clientele. Some of the proceeds will allow us to purchase a pedicure spot to offer pedicures.
