MALT FORWARD
Black Hammer Brewing will brew and serve the best European Ales and Lagers in Northern California in our San Francisco brewery and tasting room in SoMa. In a sea of umpteen-percent-ABV hop-bombs, Black Hammer Brewing will create malt-focused, superbly balanced sessionable beers that are based on styles that have persisted since the Reinheitsgebot in 1487. Using our microbrewery and tasting room in the heart of San Francisco as our launch pad, we plan to serve our beer at our taproom, while quickly expanding to a regional presence on the West Coast through strategic brewing and packaging partnerships.
LEADING EDGE BREWING TECH
We are launching with a diverse skill set and technological approach that is relatively uncommon in the startup craft brewing industry – our team consists of Jim Furman, a skilled chemical/nuclear engineer and brewer, and Kevin Jackey, our CFO and a skilled financial professional. We’re employing brewing process control technologies that even most established breweries haven’t yet adopted, including proprietary fermentation approaches and gluten-reduction techniques that are only recently gaining traction in the industry. We don’t just see brewing as an ancient art, we see it as a science where quality, production and design can be enhanced by new technologies.
Black Hammer Brewing, Inc. (BHB) was established to capitalize on a sizable gap in the fastest growing sector of the alcohol industry. Backed by an award winning product line, along with in-house operational, marketing, and finance expertise, the firm aspires to aggressively capture market share in the California Craft Beer sector.
Black Hammer Brewing includes an on-site beer taproom which overlooks the brewery in the booming SoMa neighborhood of San Francisco. The taproom is social- and beer-focused, with all Black Hammer Brewing offerings on tap at all times in a warm, cozy atmosphere where the focus is enjoying friends and hand-crafted beer of the highest quality. The space lends itself to a German-styled beer garden within the brewery, with natural lighting from 14 foot roll up doors, hops vines, and a friendly, open environment.
Jim is an award winning brewer by night and a professionally licensed mechanical, nuclear, and chemical engineer by day. Jim’s latest project has been the development and support of two thermo-chemical test facilities overseas, and he is currently working on a chemical test program for the entire US Reactor fleet. Jim is trained as a BJCP beer judge, he’s a founder of the University of Connecticut Zymurgy Club and he’s an avid chef, cicerone and a serious brewer – Jim’s passion is to make and serve great beer. In 2012 alone Jim won 25 awards for his beers, which are widely regarded as “the best beers we’ve ever tasted” by those that have had the good fortune to try them. Jim will be responsible for brewery/taproom operations, technical oversight, personnel and corporate management, and building his vision that will be born as Black Hammer Brewing.
After seven years on Wall Street, Kevin and Jim were introduced on a family vacation. Over pints of hand crafted home brew, there was no question this beer needed to be presented to a broader audience and could fill the growing need of quality lagers in the budding craft market. With a pedigree of entrepreneurship and several years of experience at major financial institutions, an agreement was struck between the two to build a world class environment to serve the best English style beers in America.
Kevin graduated Monmouth University and accepted his first position from Citigroup in March of 2007 on a synthetic credit trading desk, and is currently the Vice President of Risk Analysis for a prominent British firm on Wall Street. All of BHB’s finance, accounting and cash flow management will be handled in house by this seven year Wall Street veteran, and Kevin will leverage his exceptional financial acumen to help grow Black Hammer Brewing into a leading brewery in Northern California.
