Cal & Sigma, agents of The British Occult Secret Service, battle a crafty demon for a lost soul in their first full length adventure.
Cognition #1 is a 22 page, black & white, single issue comic that follows the exploits of a steam-powered automaton inhabited by a human spirit called Cal and a demonically possessed mouse named Sigma. They battle spirits, monsters and folkloric nasties for the British Occult Secret Service (BOSS) during the ‘Golden Age’ of the Victorian era.
Issue #1 is the first long form COGNITION story. After introducing the characters and their world in the #0 issue, we get to see the team swing into action battling a malevolent demon for the possession of an innocent soul.

After the overwhelmingly popular reaction of the set of pin-ups I commissioned for the first campaign, I have once again sourced a set of unique interpretations of the Cognition characters by hugely talented comic artists. There is work from: Andrew Pawley (Galaxafreaks), Dan Butcher (Vanguard), Dan Harris (Druid Investigations), Tom Mortimer (Dirty Rotten Comics), Rory Donald (Griff Gristle) and one other that will be announced during the campaign.
This artwork will feature in the book itself as a pin-up gallery and form parts of the rewards and stretch goals.
I’ve tried to produce rewards that will give added value to backers, without the cost of those rewards inflating the target to an extent that the main point of the campaign is lost. That being the print run.
Limited Kickstarter Bookplate – A numbered run of 50 bookplates, specific to this Kickstarter Campaign. Each one will be signed by Ken, and signed with a sketch by Sam.
Postcard Set – A set of 7 artcards, 148x105mm, thick stock, coated front for the artwork, with a matte finish on the back.
Notebook Set – Everything I make starts as a scribble or a drawing in a notebook. I have many books that I carry around. I know I’m not alone in this so I thought this might be a cool reward. Set comprises: 2x A5, 48 page notebooks. Custom printed covers inside and out. Each set comprises 1 notebook with lined paper and 1 sketchbook with blank paper.
Art Commissions by Sam Bentley – Sam is offering two groups of commission slots. 10x A4 inked character sketches & 5x A3, full colour, digital art pieces, which includes an A3 print, and a high res digital file. You can see more examples of Sam’s work on his website –www.theartofsambentley.com – Commissions will be completed in order of pledge date, and dispatched by recorded delivery separate from the other rewards.
Lettering Services by Ken Reynolds – Ken will letter your comic short story or full issue. You can see samples of his previous work here – http://kenreynoldsdesign.deviantart.com/gallery/
You can add additional rewards to your pledge. *APPLIES TO PHYSICAL REWARD TIERS ONLY*
Extra copies of Cognition #0 & Cognition #1 – £3 per book
Extra Postcard sets – £5 per set
Extra Notebook sets – £7per set (Limited to 1 additional notebook set per pledge.)
To add an add-on to your pledge, follow these instructions:
1. Press the ‘Manage Your Pledge’ Button. If you have not pledged yet, it will say ‘Back this Project’.
2. Increase your pledge in the ‘Pledge Amount’ box by the total amount of the items you want to add.
3. Once the KickStarter campaign ends you will receive a survey that will ask you questions so that you can clarify your choices.
The risks are minimal on this project. The main content of the book is ready to go to print. All rewards and Kickstarter exclusives will go into production as soon as the campaign ends.
I hope to be able to fulfill all rewards within 1 month after a successful campaign ends, the art commissions may take longer. I have geared all the work involved in creating and delivering the rewards towards the skill-set, experience and contacts I have gained through working in the design industry for over 10 years.
If there are any unforeseen problems, I will be transparent and upfront about it, while keeping all backers updated as I solve them.
After the success of my first campaign earlier this year I feel totally confident that I’ll be able to deliver on all of the promises set out above.
