THE STORY:

My dream is BIG. I am raising money to kick start an even BIGGER dream – to give the kids in Lusaka West, Zambia a safe, stimulating place to make their dreams come true. A Pre-School to Grade 12 school. We already have the Pre-School to Grade 9 and it’s amazing. But then once the kids reach the end of Grade 9 things get complicated. They have to find a place to continue studying. Now there are only 2 secondary schools in the area, 300 spots maximum, for over 3000 kids that are graduating in that part of Lusaka West alone (not to mention those who come from further afield. And it’s not just that they have to compete for few places, it’s that Mukwashi is a special place. Mukwashi means family in one of the local languages and really we are like a family. The teachers know the kids and their families and their life situations. They give more than just academic training – they give kids a place to grow in confidence and community. $40,000 is just the beginning. The whole project – 3 new classrooms, Science lab, multipurpose room, teacher housing – will cost a lot more. But the first $40,000 will help start it all. Give what you can. It’s not charity you’re giving – it’s opportunity. We had ours now let’s help others have theirs. History: In August 2006, 5 months after I lost my fianc√© to cardiac arrest, I moved to Zambia to help start up a school in Lusaka, West. The school had a name – Mukwashi Trust, it had a head teacher, Judah Sikamikami, there were 90 kids registered, 4 empty classrooms save for chalkboards and desks and lots of dreams. I was only going to stay for 3 months, just to help get things started and mostly so that I could disappear. I lived in Zambia for 7 years and continue to be the volunteer director of this amazing school. We now have over 380 kids registered from Pre-School to Grade 9. There are 14 members of staff, 6 classrooms, 5 teacher houses, a library thanks to Bonn International School and a computer lab thanks to East Ridge Middle School and so many more beautiful things. If you read this whole thing (WOW!) it’s time to click on the video.

OUR MISSION

SUPPORT OUR MISSION BY CREATING YOUR OWN FUNDRAISER.

If you’re as passionate about our cause as we are, it’d be amazing if you created a fundraiser on Crowdrise to raise money for our Charity. Crowdrise makes it super easy and fun, and your support is invaluable to our mission. Consider giving up your next birthday by asking for donations instead of gifts. Or run a marathon and ask your friends to sponsor you. We love getting donations but there’s nothing better than when you go a step further and help us raise money from your network of friends. Lots of little donations really do add up. The power of the crowd is real. Please create a fundraiser and help us make a real-life difference for this incredibly important cause.
