Norma’s story

My name is Norma Hymes and I’m a Hair Extension Owner from East Palo Alto, CA. I have been in the hair business for over 20 years and it was a dream of my late daughter Aliscia and myself to open a local Hair Extension & Wig Business. Well, unfortunately my daughter Aliscia was killed in a car accident in 2008 in South Carolina and I thought my world had come to a complete stop! But I thought about what would she want me to do? Allow depression to take over or turn the depression into success and keep her legacy alive thru opening a Hair Extension and Wig shop in her name.

In 2014, when my mother was very ill, I began to draft a business plan for Alicia’s Hair House as an outlet away from the hospital and care giving duties. I currently work full time for Palo Alto Unified School District as a Outreach Specialist for Secondary Education and I work full time for Facebook Security/Allied Barton. I currently sell my hair through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and on my website.

It was the business courses I took at The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in East Palo Alto that helped make my dream a reality. The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center introduced me to so many great business owners that have shared their tools for success. While there, I also entered a pitch competition – and to my surprise I won and was giving wonderful feedback from the judges!

I’m a confident woman that’s determine to be successful in the Hair Extension business. Going into any business is a risk but you must believe in your product and be able to think outside the box. Know your buyer’s market, competition, price market and of extension knowledge of your product. I’m not a stranger to hard work and any successful business owner will tell there’s no set hours to a successful business!

This loan is special because:

It supports a women entrepreneur looking to expand her hair extension business.

More about this loan

Business Description

Here at Alicia’s Hair House, I resell human hair bundles, synthetic hair, and wigs. I currently work with two sales representatives. I offer my clients guarantees and full refunds (as long as the packaging hasn’t been opened). I have completed my business plan and created a business bank account. I have also obtained a business visa card, a business license, a State Board of Equalization number, a PayPal Account, and over 15 Wholesale Hair Companies Accounts. I also have a business logo (and have applied to get my logo branded) and business cards for myself and my representatives.

Alicia’s Hair House is known for providing top hair quality and and excellent customer service! My customers share pictures of their amazing hair braids, weaves and quick weave hairdo’s on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. I also blog about healthy hair, coloring human hair extension and investing in the best brands. I do a lot of special orders and go out of my way to find specific styles of hair. Alicia’s has a great reputation and hopefully will continue once I’m able to build my inventory. I am currently selling my hair in beauty shops around the Bay Area.

At the moment, I rent incubator space at The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in East Palo Alto, CA. In the next year I plan on opening my very own Hair Weaving Bar and Shop!

What is the purpose of this loan?

With a $5,000 loan from Kiva, I will get the inventory I need to fully build out my studio space and begin to sell, re-order, and re-stock.

The products I will be purchasing are wig heads, hair for display, wigs for display, and mirrors and chair for my customers to use when they visit.

Also. I can purchase a cash register, cameras and alarm service for the store and to protect the inventory. To have a actual walk-in establishment where customers can come in browse, purchase, and pick up the hair and accessories. They also would be able to try on the wigs and get feed back on their purchase.
