On Saturday September 26, 2015 I found out I was pregnant.
On Tuesday September 29, 2015 I had an abortion. There is a story that exists in the time between those two dates, but I had no idea the bulk of my abortion story would happen in the months to come.
I didn’t expect that it would conjure all the women in my life.
My mama and how she spoke spirituality and the state of the human heart with me at age 5. My grandma and how she grew up surrounded by date trees on the side of a mountain overlooking the Yellow River.
I didn’t expect my experience to be about sisterhood.
The 26 hands of my 13 friends who laid me on the ground where I learned surrender. The stories and tales that cascaded my way after I shared mine.
And so the seed was planted.
Names of Women is a short film based on a true abortion story. Our mission is to use this story as a lighthouse for women to find solidarity and share their stories in community with one another.
This film is 100% based on my true abortion story.
I am not naive to think that this film will not receive hate mail. But the type of love I am interested in is not love that is easy. It is the love that exists after you have traveled to the very heart center of fear.
That is where this film is planted.
