Sharron with two r’s made her entry into this world , doing the twist with chubby checker (Come on baby Let’s do the twist). That’s the story her parents fondly relay to her with a smile. Sharron born in Brooklyn now the mother of two daughters , wife of Herbert –Frost, loves the Lord, people , traveling and the beach . She has taught in the schools of East New York Brooklyn for more than twenty years. Word Up Café born from the heart of a teacher, Ms Sharron J Kennedy-Frost. I initiated the Poetry & Jazz Café more than 10 years ago in Public School 328, located in East New York Brooklyn. In 1995, I began teaching in the community of East New York. At the time I lived there with my grandparents whom called this place home for over 30 years. When my church moved from Brownsville to East New York (ENY) , my spiritual commitment was cemented in ENY, live, work, walk and worship in ENY. It started out as a math lesson and turned into the Phillis Wheatley Poetry & Jazz Café. The purpose of the Café was to teach math in a memorable way, raise money for instruments and more importantly to introduce the students to the idea of entrepreneurship. The cafe raised enough money to purchase instruments and produce the PW Jazz Band, it gave students a place where they could showcase their talent and express their feelings in non-violent ways. It was met with enthusiasm from the students, staff and community at large. The ideal was so successful and heartwarming that it inspired the idea to eventually open Word Up Cafe. It is my belief that we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper.
